This past weekend ( 3 really) took apart the steering column ib an 84' to tighten the 4 screws buried all the way down. After alot of help & pictures from you guys and other vette owners, got it apart, tightened the bolts and proceeded to put it back togather. Not a piece of cake! When I finally got to the re-assemble of the horn plate, I put the plate puller/installer on it and started to tighten. The interior steering shaft just drifted out (the one with the notch and 3/8" threaded hole in it). I didn't notice it on the removal, as I popped the ring retainer off. This shaft comes all the way out and has a keyway on the bottom. There is a solid rod within it but it doesn't seem to attach to anything in the lower shaft. Is it supposed to be like this? I doubt it. Where did I go wrong? Did something pop internally? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

The only rod I am familiar with on the steering column is the one that goes from the high beam light switch that is mounted on the column to the stalk that you use to turn on the high beams. On my 93 that switch is mounted about half way down the column.

I'm thinking he's talking about the main shaft that goes through the center down to the rack. I don't have a clue, as I have never had one of these apart, but that's what is sounds like. Where's GMJunkie or C4C5specialist when you need them?

Its the main shaft, I'm sure. My issue is I can pull it straight out. No idea where or what it attaches to at the bottom, unless I rip it all apart again.
