Has anyone heard anything about a GM plan to remove the steering column lock mechanism on all C5s?

One of the other forums has a posting about a letter from GM to be mailed to all C5 owners on February 15, about removal and reprogramming.

I heard that it will apply to both manual and automatic transmission C5s.

Interesting. It looks like they've modified the previous recall (here) which removed the lock plate from automatics, but not for manuals.

According to what you posted, it seems they're removing it now for manual transmissions (non-export models) too.

Gm...Awful

I paid to have my column lock. Now they are telling me to bring it in and have it so it will no longer lock. This is ridiculous. I already had the whole column lock motor replaced in 2003 to the tune of 500 dollars.

CAC, Rob & Tammy,

Thank you for researching this issue.

It will be a relief to have that mechanism removed, gone, and eliminated forever.

Well look at it this way, if they don't remove it you could be replacing it again in another few years.:w

Got my new recall notice today from GM. They are removing the locking mechenism ,according to my letter, from my 1999 stick. They only talk about the 99 in my letter as that is what I have. I am sticking to my CLB which works great, no grubby hands on my car.:D

After receiving the GM letter regarding this "not quite a recall", has anyone had the lock plate removed by a dealer?

And, if so, were there any PCM changes applied? ...Or anything else to beware of?

Thanks,
Peter

Extended Warranty

My letter on my '01 said my warranty had been extended thru '08 on this issue :confused ............G.:cool
