I've forgot how it was mounted, and there is no good picture in the assembly manual: Should the end (where the tie rod end connects) be higher or lower than the mounting bolts? (i.e should the end be pointing upwards or downwards)

Not sure this answers your question but it is a photo from my 74. I have been spending my time on the other end of the car but clearly this end will need attention. Hope this helps if you need a different view let me know.

Thanks, but it is not visible in this picture. What I am talking about is the outer part of the steering knuckle assembly, that attatch to the tie rod end (just behind the tire).

are you talking about the "idler arm" which mounts to the frame with two bolts or the tie rod ends which connect the centerlink to the spindles?
Craig sr

the idler arm goes in with the two bolts to the frame above the link.
the tie rods go in from the bottom they are a tapered fit and start in the largest diameter first, give them a tap with a brass hammer to "seat" them and then tighten down the bolts and install cotter pins

No, I'm talking about the spindle itself. The "arm" on the spindle that connects to the tie rod end. I had the spindle apart, but now I forgot which arm that belongs to wich side... The other parts of the spindle is marked R/L, but not this one.

Here it is (spindle arm).

Well, it looks from the picture that the end is pointing slighly upwards.

Johan
the tie rod ends go in with the bolts on top, so look closely at your spindle arm and see which side has the larger diameter hole and that side should go down. the hole is tapered where the tie rod goes into it.

Ah, ofcourse!
Thanks!
