Hello
I have a manuall -98 with the code C1281.I don,t have active Handling.
What does this senor do on my car? I am not giving the dealer the 625$
(Europe) they want to replace it if it does not make any difference.
The thing that bugs me is the "Service Vehicle Soon" warning that comes on.
The car runs just the same with the warning. Is there any way around this message?
By the way, first Vette and I just love it!!

The information is used to calculate three things :
1- the front wheels position when centered.
2- The front wheels position when turning.
3- The rate at which the steering wheel is turning.

The EBTCM (Electronic Brake Traction Control Module) uses the digital input from the steering wheel position sensor to calculate the direction the driver of the vehicle is trying to steer during an ABS event. This information is also used to calculate the rate at which the steering wheel is turning to control the amount o effort required from the driver to turn the steering wheel using Magna Steer (variable effort C5 power steering system).
You can try to replace the sensor yourself by using this DIY.

However, that may not solve the problem. Was the steering column disconnected from the steering rack? That could be a calibration problem. The usage of a tech II is most likely required. You can also check for 2.5 volt when the steering wheel is centered with a digital voltmeter on the blue wire, the one close to the center of the connector .
