I am replacing my 1975s stereo with a new CD player. I have my new harness and everything seems pretty straightforward. The harness wires and colors are all the same except what I am seeing for the red and the black wire. The current harness' black and red wires go into a little black box (this box is unmounted) and then they exit the box. I don't see the black wire grounded anywhere behind the stereo. This box will not open for the life of me but I think it has to be either an engine noise suppressor or breaker. There is a fuse for the red wire already (after this red wire exits the box). I would just wire the harness the exact way except the new harness black wire has a fork on the end of it and says it should be mounted on the chassis. I have a good area of chassis to do this but my question is if I should tie that current black wire going into this box in with where I ground the new black wire (with the fork) on the chassis?....so basically the same wiring scheme that worked for the old cassette player/harness should be done? Any advice appreciated! :confused

Could you post or link any pics of the items you're describing? I know you've done a good job of describing things, but I could use more info.

Can I suggest an alternate idea?? I decided not to replace my vintage radio and installed a stereo sytem under the rear deck behind my seats. The new unit is completely seperate and connected to two speakers in a box to the rear of the storage compartment. It sounds and looks great.

The "little black box" you mention doesn't sound stock. Factory harness will be red or yellow for power; black for ground; gray for illumination.

:)

Well everything worked out. I ended up grounding the new black wire from the harness to the chasis, I blocked off the black wire going into the box and connected the red wire to the red one still running though the box. I talked to my brother in law (who used to install stereos years ago) and this was our best idea since getting into the box (to see exactly what it is) would break it. Grounding on a clean available chassis was ideal too I think. It has to be some kind of after market engine noise suppressor but everything works amazing so I am happy:)

I actually got the replacement middle console from Corvette Central that is CD player ready. I just had to remove a lot of panels and hook the gauge cluster to the new one. Fits like a glove. So I put original in storage with no cutting up. The CD player is a pioneer with a green backlight so it matches dash lights well. It came with a simple remote too. I put it on a local rock station and in scrolling print it told me "Led Zeppelin" was on. I really like that.

Now if I could find where the wife hid the darn camera I will post a pic....
