This question doesnt pertain to my vette but there are alot of smart people on here so . . . I have a 73 Scout (345) which I rarely drive but when I start it cold there is some valve or tappet noise until the oil gets up there . .it has always done it but seems much worse recently . . . thing runs great no problem there . . question - is there anything I can add to the oil to free up that sticking valve or whatever it is?

Re:

I know that this is going to sound unbelievable, but my uncle who is a certified mechanic has recommended many times to add automatic transmission fluid to your oil mixture in these cases. He has claimed it to contain a high percentage of detergent, and helps to break down the varnish that is causing the lifter to stick. I know it sounds nuts, but it works.

Good luck,

Jim

I've used a product you add to the oil before changing and run the car (at idle) for ten minutes, then drain. I think its called 'engine flush' or '10 minute flush'. It works great by removing all the sludge, tarnish, etc. I'd give it a try.

I always add 'Marvel Mystry Oil' to all of my cars and trucks. Its a good preventative measure.

Quite a few folks used automatic transmission fluid in the engine oil back in the 60's for the reasons mentioned above. Really not too unbelievable, it's pretty highly detergent & supposedly would help remove varnish/deposits from valve stems & lifters failing to hold prime. Sometimes seemed to help, sometimes didn't, but never knew of it doing any damage to an engine, as long as it was only a quart or so out of a fillup of 5 or 6. Had one customer who always wanted a quart of auto trans fluid in the engine with every oil change, even from day one when the car was new. Go figure . . .

Thanks for the imput . . . I'll try the "10 minute" flush - the vehicle is so rarely driven and old that I'm sure it could use some "devarnishing"!!

It works great kust follow the instructions and I've even run it a little lonher for really old motors. One warning though. If the varnidh is holding it together ie. cylinder walls, it may start smoking.

There is an old product called 'Rislone'. Dump a quart in just before the oil change. I'd run it til warm, then let it sit over nite, warm it up, then change your oil. Works great for removing varnish. It's been around since the '40's if not earlier for that very problem-sticking rings, lifters, valves etc.

Rislone WORKS!!!!!!!!! Just my .02 worth.Used it years ago on a 250 Chevy & it worked great!!!!

Not sure of the spelling but I think it is Reslone. Anyway, used it seveal times on several differant vehicles to quiet nosiy lifters. It works.

Thanks for all the imput - man does that stuff do the trick or what!! Sounds brand new!!!
