As you may remember, I need a new hood.

So, I have the one option of looking around for a used (stock) hood, which is probably the cheapest way to go, unless it ends up needing any work to get it right...

And the other option is getting an aftermarket hood. Having seen several in person, I do fing myself really liking the look of the "stinger" hood on the C2's. I've seen these hoods for C3's, and they look good in pictures, but I've never actually seen one in the flesh. At $450 or so (Vanacor), it's a bit more expensive than a used stock hood, but if I'm going to replace the hood anyway, I'm seriously considering either something like this or an L88 hood.

I'm curious if the scoop is functional (open)? I've seen some that are filled, and others that are open - does anyone know which is the case with this hood?

If the scoop is open, does anyone know where the it is located, front-to-back? I'm curious exactly where the airflow would be entering, in relation to the air cleaner location.

Will this hood clear an Edelbrock Performer AirGap manifold? I may go with that manifold when I re-do the engine, and I want to make sure it will fit.

Finally, is the quality there with these hoods?

Back to the top......

I am supposed to be getting one delivered today, so I'll be able to tell you. I purchased mine from ecklers, but with far too many parts being wrong It will be my last order from them.

(ecklers numbers were correct but actual parts were wrong)

Never the less, I'll shoot pics and post when it comes in and I inspect the hood.

hood

I was thinking about putting one of those on my 74 in the future. Let me know how the Ecklers one turns out.

Vanacors also has the Stinger hood, about same price. I have had trouble with Ecklers in the past, seems to always be easier to go through the Manufacturer, Vanacors is probably thier supplier.

STINGER HOOD

As promised here is the scoop, no pun intended

First Wamp, Ecklers own the patent on this model of the stinger, which I did check and look up, and also they are made in house, I I show with my first picture.

I blured off the model number to protect the guilty

Joe, I was affraid of this myself, and its true... Non functioning scoop

As seen from the top down view

Another shot, this time from the front so you can see a bit more clearly

And now of the bottom.

I must say the quality is very good, and after talking with the body shop they say that modding the hood to make it into a fully functioning scoop should be no problems.

Well see better they touch it now at this point than me :)

Looks good.

Could you measure the distance from the "point" at the front of the hood, to the scoop? I'm trying to figure out where it will line up, exactly, in relation to the air cleaner.

Thanks
Joe

Joe,

Ok I'll have to do it tomorrow, as its back in the box, it was a two person job getting it out and back in so I coud inspect it for damage, I do plan on dry fitting in the next day or so and I'll measure it then for you.. get all your requests in now, cuz after dry fit its off to the body shop :)

This unit under the hood seals the air cleaner to the front opening.

You can see it peeking out through the hole.

This Chevrolet piece is over 34 years old, so unavailable. But, aftermarket pieces are apparently available that will allow for sealing to the cowl area in the rear.

Joe here ya go

Front tip to middle end edge, 61 3/4"

take that numbers half and across the width 40 3/4"

From front corner to rear corner tip 71 1/4"

And from Front tip to front center of scoop 27 3/4"

All number are pretty darn close some rounded up and some down, but pretty darn close.

It was dry fitted tonight and we did run into one minor problem, length it fit like a glove, width it again fit like a glove.

The front radiator support on the other hand it about 1" to high, so its going to come out and the over rounded top is going to get cut down a bit... I'm sure this isnt the end of this story :)

Thanks, I was unsure of what it looked like, but now I have a picture that with a little fabrication magic I should be able to glass one together.

Glass is cheap the hood wasnt, so if it doesnt turn out then I'll look at buying one :)

Bill

Thanks, guys.

billybob: if it's off by an inch, wouldn't it be better to call Eckler's, than to modify the hood or radiator support? That much of a variance seems to be a manufacturing defect.

67: I'm not sure I can picture how that works...

The large black metal base sits directly on the carb, along with the approximately 5" diameter screen (hard to see here), the small cap on top of the screen and a wing nut.

Around the black base sits a foam cushion (not visible in this photo) upon which the fiberglass (white in this case) wing actually sits.

Also missing in this photo is the circular foam element (about 4" tall) which would surround the large outer screen showing in the photo.

The narrow scoop at the front mates up to the hole in the stinger hood after removing the chrome insert that came on all '67 big block hoods.

The wider area of fiberglass at the sides fits up against the underside of the hood where the 4-2-7 numbers sit.

Which car is it going on billybob? color? I really hope you're getting the 'stinger' part in a different color....
Im sure someone has painted it uniform
Looks fantastic though, gives aggression and direction...cool.

Joe,

The idea of bubba'g the car to make the hood fit wasnt sitting well, so I fit it again and crawled up underneath to take a closer look.

I mean geez the ideas of lowering the rad mounting, shaving it down, or taking a B.F.H (big f***ing Hammer) to it etc just didnt sound like options

It would apear that the hood dam (foam) is/was the problem, I ripped it out, in pieces mind you and its almost 2" thick in the center, re-fit the hood and it now sits properly with about 1/2" to spare, so after compairing the old dam to the new dam I might just have to shave off a bit and all will be good.

The old dam was also alot less plyable then the new one so I think we'll be ok.

Tomas,

Its new home will be on the 75 as its the current modifications in progress car, a new paint job is due, and I'm still trying to decide if I want to leave it red or go black.

If I go black the stinger will go red, and vice versa, it will probably stay red which means black stinger, I mean I just bough all new black leather interior bad time to decide you want to change colors I guess :)

67: so, we're looking at the front of the assembly, here? (closest to the camera)

Does the whole assembly lift off the carb when the hood opens (leaving the carb totally exposed)? Or does part of the black portion remain fixed to the carb, and part lift up with the fiberglass? Or does all of the black portion stay fixed to the carb, and only the fiberglass lift?

billybob: glad to hear it could fit without major modifications. Maybe once you get it aligned correctly, crush up some aluminum foil and stick it to the top of the rad support with double-sided tape, then close the hood, to get the correct thickness for the replacement foam?

Joe

I always thought that stinger hoods had an inlet in that "stinger" for ram air? I guess not by looking at that picture.

But it sure does look nice. I always liked stinger hoods. :)
