Stingray option?

Was the Stingray a option? Or did all vettes for '63 to 76 come with the Stingray emblem. I know it was Sting Ray from '63 to 67, and one book I have says Stingray's run through '77, but my '77 is not a Stingray. I don't see any option code for Stingray in any of my books. I also think that '53 to '55 should be the C-1s, '56 to '62 C-2s, and so on.

Corvettes were 'Sting Ray' from 63-67, and 'Stingray' from 69-76. '68's didn't carry the designation, and it was dropped again in '77.

In the years that they used either 'Sting Ray' or 'Stingray', all Corvettes were labeled as such. It was not an option.

The 1976 corvette is the last C3 with the side emblem that says stingray. In 1977 they changed it to those flags. 1968 also does not have the stingray emblem.

I've never owned a '77 and have never really researched it, so I don't know if that year carried the 'Stingray' name anywhere inside, in the owners documentation or marketing literature. If it didn't, then I would have to say no - technically the '77 is not a 'Stingray' even though it was largely the same as the '76 (the last year to carry the 'Stingray' name).

General information

Those particular listed years carry the emblem. The Sting Ray or Stingray emblem did not denote any particular option, it was just a name.
Many people call all of the C3 generation stingrays, but that is just a generalization, like saying all C3s are 'sharks' because of the similar bodystyle.
At least, that's how I look at it.

I noticed that your vette is white...you need to find a Great White shark stuffed toy to ride shotgun with you!

Well, I think that the '56 &'57 are close enough to the '58 to 62, with the coves and all, to be the same Gen. Although my book "The great book of sports cars" by the auto editors of consumer guide. Portland House publishing. states that the '68 was the fifth-generation. So they seem to agree with you.

I consider my '78 a "Stingray". It doesn't say it, but that's just the era, I guess you could say. And I also refer to her as a "Shark" too. She's the Silver Shark.

People always argue about there being 2 or 3 generations where everyone else says c1. I think the point is the term generation. Of course the cars aren't expected to be the same year to year, but saying that a 68 is more like an 82 than a 57 is a 58 is a stretch, I think.
Not that it really matters, it's just a name. When I think sting ray and c3, i really think chrome bumper cars. I know more years were called sting rays, but thats my opinion.
I would not call a 78 a stingray stallion, with the above disclaimer. I prefer the Shark name anyhow.

I think not. the fifty eight is heavier, has four headlights, different fender lines, covers over the coves, extra grille openings, a lot of useless chrome and fake louvers in the hood. The fifty seven is clean and simple. The 82 is much more clearly an updated 68. A 56 or 57 has always been and will always be my dream Vette. I turned down a 58.

To me, it was the ugliest Corvette of all time. Not because of inherent ugliness, but because of what they did to the simple sleek gorgeous 57 to make it a 58. I felt the same way about the 58 Thunderbird. the 57 was a timeless classic, and in 58 they turned it into a pregnant cow. Now I'd take a 58 of either, simply because of their appreciating value. But not back then!

What then makes a Stingray a Stingray? Just the side emblem? No, I personally don't think so. It's the body. And that Shark body is used for the C3s, so I think all C3s are Stingrays. Just my interpretation...

TonyK, no doubt in my old and feeble mind - the 57 Vette. The 57 Vette was and is my all-time favorite car, except for my 55 MGTF with fuelie Vette engine that I had in college in the mid sixties after my first army tour.
