Strange Noise

When I filled it, I first added 4 ounces of additive, then about a half gallon of fluid, and everything was fine until recently. I wonder if maybe the quality of the additive was just no good and it broke down quickly? That is of course if that is what the problem is.

"Another source of noise when changing directions comes from brake pads . Take the back wheels off ( uh.. be sure to jack the car up first ) then take a large screw driver and wedge it between the lugs and move the wheel back and forth. Sometimes the disc brake pads are a tad small and will shift back and forth causing a very iritating click as the brake pads shift because of direction change."

Well, I just heard from the shop, and guess what they found (oh mighty jeddi was right). Everyting is mechanically sound, and the clidking is coming from the brake pads. It seems, (as I was told early on in this investigation) that the pads on the Left Rear wheel are a little loose and rotate just a bit and "click" when changing directions. They aren't doing any damage, but I wonder if I just live with it, or seek out more advice on how to fix it.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks to all for your advice.

Steve, I have been away on vacation for 2 weeks and just catching up on the "old" posts here. The noise and problem sounds like the same one we chased on my car for months. It turned out to be a little bit of play in the spindle flange. To make a long story short,we used a compound used in heavy equipment to fill in the splines. It's a long shot but something else to look for.

Do you feel as though the parking brake is adjusted properly? it should self-center in the drum, but if the adjustment is excessively loose there would be more movement than normal. I would adjust the brakes until they drag, then back off only 2 or 3 notches. New parking brakes should be burnished after installation as well. :)

Steve,

Mine do this too. Since it's not hurting anything, I've not fixed it yet but there is a pretty inexpensive solution that I will be trying. All of the catalogs sell a set of eight shims that slide over the ends of the pad. They are intended to make the pads fit snug to prevent some of the squeaking caused by the pads sliding back and forth due to play/runout in the rotors but they should (I hope) do the trick here as well. Since I know it's not hurting anything, just annoying, I've been lazy about installing the shims. I'm going to try to get it done this week prior to the cruise-in so you won't hear me clicking and squeaking but we'll see. If I pull up and the brakes are silent then you'll know it worked.
