SUV drivers need to get a grip!

After reading this post i really feel like i need to share an experience i had a few days ago. I was driving down a two lane road with the top down and was moving along at a good rate, when in my mirror i see a newer body style mustang GT convertible. I get stoped at the light and he pulls up next to me. I would have thought nothing about it, but he had that damn music up so loud i couldn't hear my car idle. He then turned the music down and with his girlfriend in the car asked me, "How does that old vette run." I replied, "your about to find out," so when the light turned i stomped it and pulled away pretty easily. He kept his distance after that. Normally i dont do that type of thing, but in this case i had to.

When in doubt, floor it.

You make a great point. They are heavy, hard to manuver, and take longer distances to stop when going fast. If they would educate themselves about the dynamics of automobiles, they might stop challenging sports cars.

I think, for the most part, when people do that around a Vette they just want to see it do its stuff. No matter what THEY are driving.

ohsobad..........

I gotta agree with you, sure, WE all know what these machines will do, the general public KNOWS what they will do, but sometimes (when Jacka**es need edicating)...Well, it IS! a corvette ya know :Steer :dance

Kudos on waiting until the traffic cleared and you could "safely "edicate" ;)

I realize this isn't a "debate forum", but I must disagree with your assessment.

I have these morons pulling their crapola even when I'm out in the wife's 8 yr old Accord. I seriously believe drivers of SUV's and 4x4's, don't really give a damn about anyone else.....not even other SUV and 4x4 drivers!

To them, a Corvette is just "another little car".

This thread reminds me of a trucker forum web site!

With all the *****in about 4 wheel drivers!
And what is it with the drivers in black shiny anythings in Windy??? ;shrug
They seem to all think they are part gangster, NASCAR, and superhero!
Never did have to wonder about their common sense when they would challenge my 600HP semi while I was doing 12 or so flower deliveries in the Chicagoland area. I knew they didnt have any!
But all in all, the folks in Chitown ARE about the best nationwide. They do know how to get places! Somewhat safely. Out here its pathetic! LA, All the NE cities and especially the Midwest cities the drivers are moronic. When you had the view I used to, you get to know who is going to do something really dumb! (8' up and really good mirrors scanned frequently)

WE all drive like the folks we complain about, on occasion. Thats why we drive VETTES!!! If you arent making noise and blowing doors off once in awhile sell that puppy to someone who will!;)

SUV Drivers

I have also noticed that being a woman and driving a Corvette some men seem to think that I do not know where the accelerator is. They constantly want to race. Sometime I show them what she can do but other times I let them make complete fools of themselves. I also own an SUV, a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee and know what it can and cannot do. When driving the Jeep, I always allow extra room in front of me when behind a Corvette. The thing I hate the most when driving the Vette is tailgaters, they drive me crazy. I cannot understand why they have to get so close.

It seems that the "Yuppie" generation needs to have the latest and greatest SUV. I really believe that they do envy the Corvette owners as they would like to be one. I guess they really believe the commericals. I have lived in Florida (17years) and Illinois (41years) and do believe that to some extent, Florida is much easier driving. For some reason up here drivers seem to think that all they have to do is put on the directional signal and that automatically allows them to pull in front of you. I have been back here for 7 years and cannot get used to that. They pull in front of you whether there is room or not. I guess the signal gives them the right to pull in front.

Thanks,
Donna

I would suppose that is simply due to the erroneous notion that "size actually matters", heh heh heh.

The time that one of those clowns does that to me and tries to run over my vehicle in the process, I am certain the size of the lawsuit I slap on them, will surely get their attention.

Here's a story you'll laugh at. About 6 weeks ago on a nice clear Sunday I just had to get the Vette out and go for a ride. I happened to get caught in the beginning of a snow storm before I got home. I was going along at a reasonable speed for the conditions and was of course passed by a shiny new Escalade going way too fast so he could pass a Corvette! About a mile ahead, around the next bend was a pair of headlights facing me. Seems the Cadillac was in the ditch facing the wrong way! I was glad to see the driver walking around so the only thing hurt was his pride. Guess SUV's aren't invincible after all.

I do notice that anyone with an SUV in winter here thinks it means that they can automatically stop or have total control in any weather condition. Obviously, the salesperson didn't inform them that 4 wheel drive does not make them invincible. I only have 2 wheel drive as the Jeep was purchased in Florida sooo I do have a tendency to be very careful in snow and rain. If I were to get an SUV with 4 wheel drive I would not change my driving habits.

Thanks,

Donna

Its all in the way that way that you use it; never out of control. I'm glad you concurred.

I was in afriend's Ferrari 360 and a BMW X5 4x4 challenged us, what a joke.

I've had my Callaway challenged by cars that couldn't get out of their own way, let alone anything else.

Basically there are a lot of idiots on the roads...:)
I agree that there are ALOT of idiots on the road. But I seem to remember (as a 16 year old in my 14 second camaro) pulling up next to some bad*ss cars I new I could never beat, and challenging them.I would do it just to see them get on it.It would give me a thrill to see them light the tires up at 40mph.But then I would give them the thumbs up and big smiles afterwards!

Sorry, just had to add...My dad taught me what a car could and couldnt do in an empty parking lot.If other fathers would do the same for their kids, maybe we would lose less kids.I am willing to bet some of our younger vette owners in this forum were taught how to drive their cars before they were turned loose in a 300+ HP beautiful piece of american craftsmanship.....jumping off my soapbox..

Wow. Lots of broad generalizations and negative emotions on this thread.

Guess I'll go against the current here...

Up until a year and a half ago, I was one of those people driving big SUVs. Specifically a K-5 Blazer. Until I got the vette, I had been driving big trucks all my life. But in recent times, there has come this hysteria about big trucks and SUVs. Suddenly, I have people looking down their noses at me at gas stations and otherwise copping an attitude. There's just this assumption that I have an SUV because I've jumped on the bandwagon... that I don't know anything about how to drive... that the vehicle I'm driving is just wasteful... that I'm some sort of idiot...

Well, in fact I do know what that vehicle could and could not do. Both on and off road. I've owned it and vehicles like it long before it was 'popular'. And it did see a lot of use as a truck and for offroading, so it was not a waste.

Frankly, I think people need to recognize bandwagons for what they are. And the anti-SUV bandwagon is just that... a bandwagon. A focus of people's anger against every car that ever cut them off on the road. Suddenly, it's not the _people driving_... it's the SUV that's the problem.

Both the current SUV craze and the anti-SUV bandwagon are deranged products from the less ideal aspects of our society. I'd much rather people tried to take a little less radical stance on these matters.

I submit to you that horrible drivers can be found in all manner of vehicles on the road. And, by the same token, good drivers can be found in all types of vehicles as well. SUVs simply are not evil inducing machines that turn otherwise good drivers into careless jerks. Making those kinds of strong claims is no different than repeating the 'All American cars suck' mantra that's common these days. It's just as overbroad, thoughtless, and misinformed.

I think most people 'notice' this big problem with SUVs because they're looking for it. Specifically. They _want_ to be angry at SUVs. So they remember very vividly every SUV they ever had any trouble with. The hackles raise on the backs of their necks when an offending machine is near by. And they actively watch it for any signs of transgression. And guess who's the one with the chip on their shoulder?

Just... chill out, folks. The average joe is just trying to get by. There's no need for all the anger. Really!

Let people drive whatever they want to drive. I mean... the way I see it, saying people shouldn't be allowed into SUVs is no different than saying people shouldn't be allowed into Corvettes. You can make the same arguments... these fast cars make people drive too fast. It turns drivers wreckless. Corvettes are a menace that must be stopped. Sound familiar?

The machine doesn't make the driver better or worse. A bad driver is a bad driver... whether driving a Honda, an SUV, or a Corvette. A driver who is prone to driving the vehicle beyond its limits will do so regardless of the vehicle. SUV or Corvette, it matters not. They'll go into the wall in the vette at that much higher a speed.

Okay... just to make some other points about various things that have been brought up on this thread...

People racing your vette when they're obviously outclassed. So what? I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape... as if the mere challenge is a horrible insult to your whole family line. Maybe some people see it this way. But for a lot of people, they do this because it's fun... not because they have some ego problem. And it's common to just want to see the supercar light up... because it's cool to watch it in action. Or just to see how close you can get. You know... these guys probably aren't expecting to win. But they still may have some hope that they're faster than they thought, too. But in any case, it's just fun to do. So chill out.

Truck headlights adjusted too high. No... they're not. Simple geometry says that there is a certain amount of distance for which they're going to shine in your mirror because they're driving the tallest vehicles on the road while you're driving the shortest (lets face it here... the _average_ car's head lights tend to shine in the mirrors of our low slung vettes). It has just as much to do with your selection of vehicle as theirs. So chill out.

SUV capabilities... a good SUV (and many of them aren't, but still) really does possess much better bad weather and bad road ability than a typical car. And it really is considerably tougher and more likely to survive an accident. These aren't absolutes. There are exceptions. But there is a real reason why big 4x4 vehicles exist.

And some SUVs do actually handle pretty well. My K-5 Blazer... while certainly no match for a sports car... could turn and brake quite a lot harder than most people expected it could.

And no.. I never saw the other cars around me as 'tiny ants in the way of my mighty machine!'. Come on, guys. Are you serious? I think you're going just a biiit overboard in trying to villify these folks. I mean really... a lot of comments on this thread are clearly more extreme than could possibly be real.

Anyway... my point is... well, I guess I've already said it a few times. You folks really just need to chill out. You're generating your own anger and your own reasons to be angry. Really! SUVs just are not a big deal. It's just another car out on the road.

And please try not to get too upset if someone wants to race you. It doesn't (necessarily) mean they have some ego problem or a vendetta against you. Usually, it's just for fun. Nothing more. Lighten up!

You're driving around in a corvette... SMILE! :D

Yes they are and yes it does happen. The feeling of "authority" that driving an SUV gives one, is transferred into a type of "agressive behavior", which was not so readily present in a lessor vehicle. Let's just say that it is quite possible those aggressive tendencies were always present, albeit repressed, but just as alcohol can release ones inhibitions, the SUV is the trigger for the release of repressed agression of some drivers.

The machine doesn't make the driver better or worse. A bad driver is a bad driver... whether driving a Honda, an SUV, or a Corvette. This is true, but only up to a certain extent. A "bad driver is a bad driver", but this bad drivers' bad driving habits are only accentuated by driving an SUV. It's a simple matter of physics.....a bad driver rear ending your Buick with a Honda or Toyota at 30 mph is going to spring your trunk lid and jar your neck a little, but a bad driver rear-ending your Buick with an Escalade at 30 mph is going to wreake untold havoc on your vehicle and probably decapitate you in the process.

That is plain and simply pure unadulterated balderdash!

A Van's headlights are nearly at the same level above the road as the average passenger car, yet are some of the highest and brightest headlights on the highway.

A disproportionate numer of smaller trucks, such as the Dodge Dakota, have their headlights aimed way too high, and theirs are only 6" or so higher than the average car.

But ALL of the full sized SUV's and 4x4's have misadjusted headlights. Not because they are "higher off the road than the average car" either. I have ridden in many SUV's, and STILL I can pick out other SUV's and 4x4's at night on the highway because of their brighter headlights. And I am at the SAME level as they are.

I used to work for an automotive dealer prepping new vehicles for delivery and back then all headlights were aimed according to certain specific specs. A truck had its lights aimed so that the main thrust of the headlite beam struck the roadway a specified distance in front of the vehicle. The same with an automobile. These settings were directly proportionate to the distance of the center of the headlamp to the surface of the road.

Back then, the only reason a trucks headlights shone into a passenger cars rear window, was because the truck was right behind the car...and this is only understandable. Such apparently is not the case today, for when I inquired into how a modern dealership aims headlights, basically the answer was "best guess" and that they no longer use any aiming apparatus as they used to. It shows too!

And your "theory" about the SUV's and 4x4's headlites being higher off the ground than a cars headlights as being the reason they are so much brighter, gets all blown apart by the simply fact of "geometry", that a semi's headlights are even higher off the roadway than an SUV's, yet they don't glare and blind oncoming traffic like those SUV's do.

SUV capabilities... a good SUV (and many of them aren't, but still) really does possess much better bad weather and bad road ability than a typical car.
Humph, and I guess that's why, out here in Iowa, whenever it snows, there are more SUV's and 4x4's in the ditches along the roadways than there are ordinary cars?

And I guess that's why there is such a high rollover factor to consider when driving an SUV or a 4x4?

And I would suppose taking into account just how far it takes to stop 3 or 4 tons of Detroit steel when one finds themselves barreling down the road at 85 mph and an emergency situation suddenly arises, would be just so much nonsense about inertia and kinetic energy, and worthless mathematical calculations?

And then there is this "off-road" factor that SUV and 4x4 drivers like to brag so much about. Let's see now, a car nowadays is running on anywhere from 16 to 20 inch wheels. Half of that distance, plus the size of the transfer case or differential, is how one determines the minimum road clearance.

Now an SUV/4x4 runs 16 to 20 inch wheels also and its road clearence is figured exactly they same way. I'm afraid I don't quite see what the supposed off-road advantage is here, other than the BODY of the SUV/4x4 is probably a foot or more higher than a passenger car. But that alone is not going to get you over any big rocks or through any running water, any better than someone in their family sedan.

I am NOT talking about vehicles with modified suspensions. I am talking about STOCK from the factory vehicles, where the road clearance from the bottom of a trucks transfer case or its lower control arms are not exceptionally higher from the road than most ordinary cars. So much for THAT advantage.

And it really is considerably tougher and more likely to survive an accident. These aren't absolutes. There are exceptions. But there is a real reason why big 4x4 vehicles exist.
I think you might actually be on to something here, as yes when you surround yourself with about 3 tons more steel than a Toyota Avalon sedan, and run your SUV into that Toyota, you have a much better chance of survival than that hapless fella in the Toy.

And all that extra steel tends to protect you from OTHER 3 ton SUV's if one of them happens to plow into YOUR SUV. That is, if neither of those colliding SUV's happens to roll over on its top and slides for any appreciable distance.

The way I read the reports on these types of accidents, there is a high likelihood that the person in the upsidedown SUV will incur severe head trauma, if not outright decapitation, as the roofs of an SUV are not sufficient to protect the occupants in a rollover/slide situation.

And some SUVs do actually handle pretty well. My K-5 Blazer... while certainly no match for a sports car... could turn and brake quite a lot harder than most people expected it could.
Yes, I have to agree, it IS rather amazing how far some of these SUV/4x4 drivers will push the limits of their vehicles just to try to impress me with their "handling ability". Yeah, right.

Anyway... my point is... well, I guess I've already said it a few times. You folks really just need to chill out. You're generating your own anger and your own reasons to be angry. Really! SUVs just are not a big deal. It's just another car out on the road.
Yup! You've made your point alright. Now, if you would please be so kind as to tell me where I should send my tithe check.......

I noticed you didn't address why these SUV and 4x4 drivers feel it's so "cool" to drive around with ALL their forward facing lighting turned on, especially on perfectly clear nights?

I notice you also didn't address why it seems that most SUV/4x4 drivers feel it is perfectly acceptable to exceed the speed limit by more than just the 5 or 10 mph that is often figured to be an unofficial "buffer zone" before it is considerer "speeding"?

And one thing YOU didn't mention, but I hear all the time, is that SUV's/4x4's are good because they are higher than cars and therefore it is easier to see what's going on up ahead of you. I wonder how long this nonsense logic will hold up when there becomes more SUV's/4x4's on the road than cars? Shallow thinking at its best.

And I DO smile whenever I am out in my Corvette. I smile ever bigger when I get finished with some SUV/4x4 driver that felt the need to "test me"....no, not TEST me, but BULLY me into moving just because he was in an SUV/4x4.

There are SOME responsible SUV/44x drivers out there. But they do seem to be in the minority. Y'all have yourself a really fine day, ya hear?

On another note, who would have expected this thread to turn into such a RANT ;shrug In many respects I agree with Scant, but who really needs the big explanation? If you don't already know the the PC crap driving this society is totally F'D then no one here is gonna point it out to you :eyerole

I repeat, have fun, be safe, and enjoy your Vette :beer There's A-Holes everywhere :w
