Synthetic Oil Test

With all the threads on synthetic oils, I have looked around for some reputable "test" report comparing synthetics in plain English, but haven't located one that doesn't seem incomplete or incomprehensible to someone who isn't a chemist. Are there any (reports--not chemists)? While I am a long time fan of Red Line, it really would be good to see how these oils stacked-up against each other in a test that seemed to be well thought out and conducted. I am particularly interested in a head-to-head match up between Red Line and Mobil 1.

Thanks! I am going through the site, now. Incidentally, I have always liked how you've equipped your car with the black wheels, fender stripes etc. I got some black ZR-1 wheels awhile ago while I was looking for an '89 or '90, and will put them on my just-acquired '89 6-spd. shortly.

Thanks Chris :beer Cangrats on your new Vette :bu

There are several tests, but none that I believe because each one i've read was done by a potentially biased party using methods that aren't strictly adhered to.

Usually they'll compare M1 in a 4-cyl and RP in an 8 and try to tell you something is better about one or the other.

You could also possibly check the bobistheoil guy website. All they talk about is oil!:D

I don't normally post on "oil" issues due to all the marketing hype surrounding how the various types are marketed (with little or no quantitative A-to-B tests to prove any of the claims), but a good friend of mine who works for Pratt & Whitney is responsible for the direct field support of a fleet of 700 P&W PT-6A turboprop aircraft engines in regular commercial service, and has never seen one shred of credible evidence that synthetic oils offer any advantage whatsoever over conventional aviation oils. That's good enough for me :) .

Aircraft engines are good to base automotive oils on? Completely different. I wouldn't use a type of oil in my corvette just because it was good in an airplane.

What does anyone think about Amsoil Syn Oil. Here's there website and the test results.

I've been using it in my Jeep since day one. Only change the oil once a year, filters as required. Seems to run fine. I don't hear any lifter chatter at a cold start up. No effect on mileage. Supposed to be good for 35k miles between oil changes. I don't go that long but probably hit 10k per year easy.
