SYSTEM COLUM LOCK

Has anyone had this issue with their C6 2005? I could not start my car yesterday. Had to have it towed to dealer. They told me it is the system colum lock module.
Why would this shut down entire car? I could not even use the On-Star. To my knowledge. On-Star is on their own battery pack?

HI there,
This is part of the antitheft system, and actually, the LAST year for the column lock system.
If it feels that its NOT working correctly, it will shut down the car.
To prohibit bad things from happening, thats the best safeguard to have.

thank u very much. figures that i waited my entire life to get this car and they are changing the one i got??? what will they use instead? is it suppose to go bad in one year. in have only had my car one year and i ordered it custome. i waited 9 months to get this car. i am concerned and dont want to start having problems.
on another forum, i was told. it is the battery and they DIC will read this system colum lock for some reason. i never had any issue with this before. the dealer is replacing the module. and... the battry charge was drained. i am anel about shifting to reverse every time i turn off the car. (per instructions) so that i do not drain my battery. the day before, the battery charge read normal. so... i dont get it???? thanks much for your reply.

Sort of the same but different from the problems of the c-5 s.Amazing the problems ran for most of the life of the c-5's .Then GM continues to have some issues on the c-6 .

Took 'em almost 9yrs to get rid of the column lock system.I'm not that smart but before I build 270,000 cars wrong ida-----

Hi There y'all, I just had my 2001 C-5 in the shop for this same problem, and it had been repaired on the recall some years back by the original owner. Come to find out they didn't do it right so the problem recurred. After spending almost 2 weeks of testing and fixing Chevy finally admitted they had made the mistake on the original recall. They sent all new parts for the column that will repair it correctly and picked up the tab for labor, parts and even the tow to get it to the garage, because this car will not run when this happens. I don't know what will happen in the future, but they assured me it was fixed this time. Scott

I had two C5 Vettes which both had column lock failures. The first we trailered in to the dealer and paid over $400 for repair, since they said part of the problem was not included on the factory recall. The second I bought a column lock bypass from Corvettes of Houston for about $50 and installed it myself. This seems like a MUCH better way to go, since it prevents a recurrence--the recall does NOT prevent a recurrence. Don't just get it repaired--prevent it from coming back!

Having said that, I also admit I'm not as sure about the C6 problem; it may be a little different. However, the GM solution was to scrap the column lock starting in 2006, so I think the bypass makes sense--the lock is not necessary.

Incidentally, the guy at Corvettes of Houston gave me a tip about the C5s. He said if it is already locked you can't install the bypass, but you can often get it to unlock by forcibly yanking the wheel to one side then the other with key turned to on, then turn it off, wait 10 seconds and turn it on again. It worked for me!

I trusted the two recalls to prevent getting locked and stuck. When I got stuck for the second time -- after doing both recalls -- I installed the column lock bypass on my C5.

My very competent mechanic told me that the CLB like the one Corvettes of Houston sells will prevent the problem nearly 100% of the time.

After installing the CLB, I traded my C5 for a C6.

The column lock mechanism may be GM's most clever sales promotion ever. I think the joke was on me... us.

About 4 months back I asked Corvettes of Houston about a C6 CL Bypass. They said the were not planning one. If there is a CL Bypass for a C6, I'd sure like to know about it. My "Service Column Lock" happened at about 34,000 miles. Dealer had it three times. In the end they replaced the Body Control Module, the Column Lock Module, and the Column Lock Actuator. (i.e, everything except the wiring harness). The CL in a C6 is different than in a C5. The C5 CLB will not work in a C6. I've heard it speculated that sometimes the problem is caused by low battery voltage. Could be it is connected to BDS. Every time I had a problem w/ my 05 it was after the car sat in the sun (Florida) for an extended time with the windows up. Everytime I was able to get the car going by either opening the doors a while to let the inside cool; or, by disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes and then reconnecting.

Scott, my friend, I think you should call Corvettes of Houston and talk to Mike, Chris, or Scott about the CLB (column lock bypass) at 1-800-829-6434. They will tell you that the the two recalls by GM do not take care of the fuel shut off problem. The second recall by GM was for the dealer to install a K harness to fix the column lock, but not the fuel shutoff. Their CLB is preventative and Mike said it will solve the dreaded column lock and fuel cutoff. They are offering free shipping (to Corvette Forum members). I had the first recall done on my 02 and it locked up. GM paid for the tow and did the second recall. But according to COH, it won't solve the fuel shutoff. I recommend that you purchase the CLB from them and install it. I ordered it and will install it before the 02 comes out of storage. As long as you are not having any problems now, you can install it. If you are having a problem, then you must have the recall done or have it fixed before installing the CLB. Incidently, I believe that the GM recall for fuel shut off expires on Feb 29, 2008. If nothing else, it is worth your time to call them and discuss the CLB solution with them.
If you purchase one, think of it as a Christmas present for you and your MY convertible. I enjoy reading your posts.

Hi Barrett, good to hear from you. Yes I purchased one of these already, and my nephew is going to hook it up for me. He is the one who helped do the repair work on mine when it happened, and he said the same thing about installing it because down the line it is going to happen again. How is the weather out there in beautiful Colorado? It wouldn't take much for me to live out there, but I have too many roots here in southern Illinois. I love your country. they told me it was my battery???
my car is a 2005 C6. i think someone thought i had a C5.nope. its a C6.
last week. i had a different problem. the clutch peddle spring wask broke and low clutch peddel level.
i am getting a bit worried about my vette!
i now have 39K miles. I treat it like a baby and i am very careful. yet, i keep having these problems. i am not knowledgable about this car stuff. so i depend on all you guys to help me. am i doing something wrong that this happened to me?
and last week. my radio.this happened 3 times. in the moring, when i first start car. the radio button. i push it. nothing???? takes about 3 times than it goes on. this has happened 3 times now.
oh , i also forgot to tell you. i have no confidence in Rydel chevy. the first question i had for them was. please check the fluid levels. after my car was there 3 hours for the spring replacement. i went home. the next day. the peddle was still down. i went back. theydid NOT check the levels. the manager told me he did not check and was so sorry. how pathetic. so, i do not feel very comfortable about having them touch my car! they are a bunch of bone heads. i should have to ask them to check my fluid levels when i get my oil changed? and they tell me they checked it? ;helpotfl:bash

HI NINA.THE CLUTCH RETURN SPRING GETS JAMMED UP WITH HIGH RPM'S AND WHEN THE FLUID GETS TO A BOIL,if you will.It's an issue that's happened to me and some others.I think there's a TSB on it.As for the COLUMN LOCK,05 is the last year for it,but it's been an issue on some 05 vettes.Get the BYPASS and you should be fine.Don't TRUST any DEALER to know much about VETTE'S!

Trust is subjective.
As for the clutch, the fluid will NOT create a broken overbiased spring.
They simply break.
As for the battery, are you aware that there are 3 different updates for parasitic power drain on 2005 c6 and that there is actually a diagnostic chart specifically for c6?
