I goofed big time! I'm installing new weatherstripping in my 1981 T-tops. Taking out the old weatherstripping I took out ridge that you are supposed to put the new one on! Very dumb, but didn't realize until I finally looked up on the internet for the 100th time how to install them, that you needed that ridge. Can I fix it?? I need help, please!!
:cry

When I did mine, I don't remember any "ridge". Can you be more specific or maybe post a picture?

Dave

Diane this site might help you!

Hi Diane

We just finished doing all the weatherstripping on our CE, it takes patience and more, we came across this
website, complete with pictures, and yes, there is a factory ridge, which threw us for a loop, but managed to
figure it out that it should stay, away if you need more help send me a note as we consider ourselves as pros:chuckle

Glad to see another gal onboard

Hi Dave,
It is the gasket that is between the window and the frame. I removed the stuff that was protruding out of the frame about 1/8 of an inch. My husband juist said that (hopefully) I don't need it. I guess you just put the glue on and apply the weatherstripping.

Hi Vette Gal,
I looked at the site and the t-top looked different than mine. Do you need to put strip caulking or post sealer on it before you apply the weatherstripping? I didn't remove the ridge on the passenger side window thank God!! Oh, my license plate on my vette is Vettgal!

Hi Diane re ur weatherstripping

Greetings from Canada....Jan (Vette Gal)

Hi Diane, did you open that last website which I sent
to you? I should have mentioned that on the top of each page there is a place which says "continue", you have to click on each page and it's step by step from beginning the installation to finishing up. I found it much easier to click each page and print it out, then we
sat and read it page by page in the garage and it made much more sense, as it showed the pictures as they went on...took the print out to the garage and had no more problems after that...our T Tops should be almost identical as yours is an 81 and mine is an 82. There is
a strip on the weatherstripping that has metal , it is metal to metal, it has to have post seal. It is the section
that goes on the T Top where you have to use the screws (over the door windows), the rest of the stripping just uses the adhesive. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the request to become friends, I have accepted glady, because it sounds like you are a hands on gal, such as I am, and I am right in their helping all
the time. Sometimes us gals have a little bit more patience than the guys:chuckle and in our garage my fingers are much smaller and I can get into places that hubby
can't....I guess I am good for something.:boogie
Actually it's my car and I detail it and keep it all " el primo" for the car shows...I don't mind telling you that
I can clean a car better than my house........more interesting I suppose. Send me a note and let me know how things are going.....see my post on girl in distress and the dilemma I faced a weekend ago when I broke down on the highway and I was in my PJ's..you will get a laugh over that escapade. Baby is all repaired now and snug as a bug in the garage.
Cheers Jan ...........(Vette Gal)
I have Collector Plates on my car and you can't personalize them, too bad eh?;shrug

Hi Jan,
Thanks a lot for the info!!! I did look at the second site and clicked on the continue. It looked like the t-tops were fiberglass. Probably didn't make any difference. I know what you are talking about where the screws go into the top. There is metal inside, but you can't see it. I wish I knew how to put a picture on this site!!! And what the heck is post seal??? My husband does help me - a little- he has sooo many other things to do, like fix our boat, house, kids etc.!!
We bought the vette 8 years ago. I am the one that drives it almost always. I do all of the detailing and I guess I'm probably as picky as you are!! To bad I'm not as picky with the house!! I don't go to car shows any more, I'm usually down at the boat. I live on it in the summer. We have a 36 foot Catalina sailboat. It's not new and that is why I am there to help fix, clean, etc. I bring the vette down there and cover it when I'm not using it. It is mostly all original. Had to put new brakes, muffler, some engine work but everything else is original. The paint is pretty good also!! Your vette looks great!!!

Hey Diane

Post seal is the soft pliable stuff they used to put in new windshields, just go to any auto windshield installer. We bought it in a roll, it does not come in a tube, it does not harden, hubby says it's very important to use this and not weatherstripping adhesive. We don't need any leaks, do we:chuckle.....my car was given a great rain test after the installation as it sat in our mechanics parking lot during a sudden monsoon rain, and thankfully
not one leak...I was so worried!
By the way I grew up very close to you......in New Brunswick, which is right next door to Maine, and spent many, many summers in the New England States and
skiing in the winters at SugarLoaf Mountain, spend vacations in Boston and had relatives in Rhode Island.
Small world, eh?
Hang in there girl..................Jan (Vette Gal)

T-tops

Hi Jan,
When I took off the weatherstripping on the part with the screws, there didn't seem to be any seal there. Maybe it came off when I removed the WS!! This post seal just goes under the part with the screws? The weatherstripping is all rubber with metal inside it. (where the screws are) Is that how yours is? I guess I'm being anal about this, but I don't want to do it wrong!! Seeing as I screwed up at first!! :L I really want to drive my car, but am afraid it might rain!! Don't have a big enough umbrella for it!:chuckle

Thanks for all of the info... Diane

Back to you Diane

Hi Jan,
When I took off the weatherstripping on the part with the screws, there didn't seem to be any seal there. Maybe it came off when I removed the WS!! This post seal just goes under the part with the screws? The weatherstripping is all rubber with metal inside it. (where the screws are) Is that how yours is? You are probably right, the post seal probably came right off when you removed the WS....We just placed this post seal along between were the screw holes are, as close as we could, this post seal is sticky on both sides, and had a devil of a time getting the screws back in at the exact right angle because they are so short.....but don't worry about this as you can pull the WS away from the T top because it doesn't really stick and try again, where if you used the weatherstrip adhesive you would have problems. We found that the new WS has preformed holes for the screws, even though you sort of have to pull it open to see them, then we just used a metal awl to line up the holes in the WS to where the screws go into the T-Top, once we found out that little trick, it all fell into place quite easily and we found out that you couldn't go wrong. I am telling you for novices
it was a little difficult at first, but once we got that portion of the WS in place, the rest was just a piece of cake...it is important to do this section first and then just do a small section at a time with the remaining three sides.

You are lucky you don't have a CE, because we had to do the back window (the hatch) which as you probably know opens.....That was a nightmare as the reproduction WS was nowhere near the same as the original. We had to take the rear window out after installing the WS and shim up the hinges so that we could have a real tight fit, we spent hours on that portion..nightmare !!:bash

After all the WS was on we had to take the car into our mechanic who is a Corvette Specialist, he rebuilts corvettes, all years and he knows them inside out. He looked over the weatherstripping install and told us we did a fantastic job and he could not have done any better. That made us feel pretty darn proud:W that we accomplished something we never thought we could ever do. Probably saved ourselves a bundle of cash.

Once you are done with your T-tops they sure fit tight, and it is amazing that there is no more wind whistle, although I find it a little hard locking them into place. Just so used to the Tops fitting so loosely.

Anyway girl, hang in there, I really admire that you are doing this yourself..it's only too bad that the suppliers of the WS, don't put instructions in with their product...cause we all know that us Gals read instructions really well, sorry guys, we know you don't like to read instructions, it's okay we understand completely!:chuckle
Diane sorry to be so long winded on this topic, if you wish send me a private message and maybe we can
exchange phone numbers and email addresses. It would be so much easier to explain, than me rambling on trying to help.
Cheers Jan:beer
