tach pegs at 55 m.p.h

Hi everybody,
im new to this forum. Thanks everyone for the useful imfo that you have supplied here. But now i have a problum. when i get in to start my vet the tac is stuck on 3,000 turn it off and it drops back to 0. start it up and it goes to 4,000 and when im doing 55 it pegs at 6,000. If anyone has or had this problum,or know anything about it that would be very helpfull.

It's broke and needs to be replaced. Not a DIY project, must use a repair center.

Could very well be the tach filter. The tach filter sits in the engine compartment, I believe near the distributor. It's a black cylinder, about 1/2" in diameter, and 1.5" long (I'm going by memory here). I *THINK* it's just a capacitor. When mine when out, I just got 0 on the tach, but I would think it could certainly cause the tach to read incorrectly.
