When i drive my vette something the tach doesnt work and sometimes start to work... ?

Does it stutter sometimes, jumping around and making a little noise?

Assuming you still have the tach driven by the cable from the distributor, that cable is probably the problem. It could be kinked just behind the distributor which would require replacement or the fittings at either end could have just worn out as well as the cable itself. It's probably never been replaced so that may be your problem.

When my old 71 did the same thing, I shot some graphite in the distributor end and it quieted it down and make it work a little better but after about six months it was back to not hardly working at all.

Really need to know the year of your car and the type of distributor.

It sounds like your tach drive gear is missing some teeth. The gear is easily replaced but you could also have a problem with teeth on the distributor shaft. That is not as easy but it is repairable. This is a very common problem on early C3's with tach drive distributors. Later cars had an electronic tach so you have a whole new set of rules and problems.

Whenever you have a problem it is important to give the year and configuration of your car.

probably a 73 w/ mech tach

An earlier thread by tguido indicates that his vette is a 73. So ... it came from factory with a mechanical cable driven tach ... the others' posts here in this thread offer good advice. When asking for help here, it's always best to state in your post what year you're working with.

How is my '78 tach driven? Is it right off the distributor? And another question, how is the speedometer work? I imagine it would have to run off the transmission...?

Thanks. :)

Stallion

Stallion,

Your is electric. It has a wire lead which goes to the side of the distributor.

As for the spedo, it goes to a little box on the side of the tranny as I recall.... perhaps someone else has more details.

tiguido,
Pull the tach cable from the distributor, and spind the cable inside with your fingers. If the tach needle moves fine, then the problem is propably inside the distributor.

Now that's a simple solution, why didn't I think of that. - Eric:w
