I have a 84 and my tank reads full all the time and its not because Im filling it. Is there some kind of additive I can put in my tank to clean the sending unit?:confused Thanks for any info! Float works fine all hoses new I just upgraded the fuel pump to high volume, works fine Ive moved the float up and down a watched the gauge still reads full. Digital dash was rebuilt by dealer I know It Is not That. :hb

I wish my tank stayed full all the time!

Hi Jason

I had the same problem and it was mechanical. One of the hose clamps on the assembly inside the tank had rotated and jammed the float arm to the full position. Pull the assembly out of the tank, reposition the clamp, reinstall. Doesn't cost anything. Takes about 1/2 hour. Don't let it run out of gas, that cost me a set of injectors! Good luck!

While you're in there, you can check the resistance of the sending unit. I don't have the manual handy, but if it changes as you move the float, it is likely okay.

Always full

Background:
Last week my '95 needed a new starter (88,000 miles) so we got it up on the ramps. Starter job required less than an hour. Changed the oil while it was in the air. My driveway has a fairly steep slope (Corvette was nose up-slope) so the front end was really up. Gas tank was about 1/2 full.
The problem:
During subsequent drive, the gas gauge read 'full' - Oh Crap. Maybe the sending unit is stuck? Never did that before.
Accidental cure: I live down a country lane that's a very sharp, short turn off of a highway with no decelleration lane or good shoulder to turn. And many drivers really tail-gate. So it was jam the brakes and fly around the corner. Gas gauge reads 1/2 full.
Dumb luck but easy and cheap.
