Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out the procedure to change the gear selector shaft seal on a TH 400 in a 73? Does the pan have to come down? Is there a special tool? I even checked the 73spot with no luck. By the way, awesome site you have there Tom. Thanks for any advice

Jim,

I am bumping this back to the top. I don't have your exact answer, so I hope somebody else can chime in soon.

You have to take the pan off and you have to remove the manual shaft from the transmission, this is seal you will be replacing for the manual shaft.

The manual shaft is secured to the selector inner lever. You have to take that nut off and the related linkage parts in the transmission. Then you should be able to pull the shaft out of the transmission case...then you can use a screw driver to pop the seal out of the case. Use a socket that fits correctly (not to damage the seal) and a hammer to pound the new seal back into the case.

NOTE:
I have done these without taking the pan off and leaving the shaft in but you have to really know what you are doing (I have done many) and it requires allot of skill not scratch the shaft or damage the case.

There have been a few times that the seal was driven so far in or if it didn't look good to go I have dropped the pan.

Thanks for the bump back to the top 69. Thanks for the info Chick, that's just what I was looking for.

Jim,
There is a special tool for removing and installing the seal. Check with any of the major tool companies. Snap-on, Matco, etc.
The tool makes it a two minute job.

Yea but not everyone has acess to the tool trucks you can but them online from matco or snap-on but usually there expensive.. i would try www.bulkpart.com see if they have it.. I know on my 4L60E there is a tool I have it.. it installs and removes the old seal not in that particular order.. I used to use www.ontool.com but they I think are out of business or something.. but there are other websites to get tools from just to a sears on excite or somthing.. good luck..

I'm sure everyone knows of a garage that is serviced by a tool dealer. Ask any mechanic for the phone number of their dealer. As for cheaper tools, you get what you pay for. I need to use my tools more than once.

True.. Snap-on is the best.. BTW The ATec Trans Tools I bought from matco are the same as the ATEc Trans Tools I bought online.. I havnt had many tools break infact the only ones I have had to replace besides a few cheap craftsmans which are pretty cheap but good for the home do it yourselfer.. were snap-on they do break but they are all warranteed.. I just want to suggest that for a tool you may only use 1 time or a few times just get it online.. but hey to each there own and I don't want to start an argument.. it's really a matter of preferance..
