Calling all professional shade tree mechanics for a little advice. I'm going to replace the pan gasket on my auto tranny and would like some thoughts and opinions on what you think is the best gasket on the market. Trying to eliminate the big red puddle that bubba helped create. I was told when I bought the car that the transmission had just been professionally rebuilt, but so far, the guys mechanic had a problem with tightening things up. Lots of loose bolts, hose clamps, and various other things.

Thanks.

Use the neoprene-impregnated cork gasket. It basically looks like cork.

Do NOT use the neoprene gasket or fiber gasket.

Also, when you pull the pan use a ball peen hammer to flatten the bolt holes in the pan. They've been known to protrude upward, preventing a proper seal.

Is that why so many automatic C3's have transmission leaks?

That's only 1 of 100 reasons why trannies leak. The primary reason is that ATF is so slippery that it oozes out of even the most microscopic of orifices!!!

Even after a reseal job, my tranny STILL leaks a little. I'm getting used to it.

Buy a metal drip pan at the auto parts store. That's what I did!

Isn't that leak irksome though? How often do you have to change/refill your transmission fluid with that leak? If you were to seal it up all the way, how would that be? Do you know exactly where the leak is? Couldn't you just use some heavy-duty sealant if the leak isn't too big?

It took me a few months but I finally fixed my annoying tranny drip so it CAN be done. Just don't overtighten:nono clean her up good and Voila! I went with the standard GM gasket kit from the dealer.
Stallion,
Sealers are band-aids not repairing. I never have and never will use a sealer of any type and especially not on my vettes. I would suggest to fix it properly or let it leak.
I change diff and tranny fluid/filter once a year. My vettes are 18&21 years old with original engines and drive trains(no rebuilds) and they both run like champs. An ouce of prevention is worth a pound cure.

because he is probably like me and can't stand leaks. i like having a nice clean garage floor. although, it does provide a good rust prohibitor on all the metal parts under the car......

my mistake, i thought you said why... a thousand pardons please....

:D That's okay. I also can't stand leaks. That's why when the weather warms up and I get a new gasket and Chilton's I'm going to fix my anti-freeze leak. :D

Actually it was an o ring. Drove me nuts locating it. I also bought a new OEM pan which is made much sturdier than the original. Hope the S/A is coming along well.

I'm glad you found it!! And replacing the pan does sound like a good idea, even if not necessary. And my Vette is coming along great! Thanks. :)

Yes do not overtighten and use a cork gasket and moisten it before installing
