Hey RJSRocket and Stu, thanks for the help. I replaced both relays on Thursday. I reconnected the battery and the light has not yet come on. I’m holding my breath. I think it’s my imagination, but , the car feel like it runs better and much stronger than before. I’ve even seen an increase in the average MPG on the display. Just hope it stays off. The new MAF sensor from GM is over $300. Thanks again.

HPG, let me know if this works after a couple of days of driving. My stock 88 throws the SES light on after about 5 to 10 miles of steady speed driving. Goes out when shutoff, but always comes back on in a couple of miles. I thought it might be the egr valve. I have been letting this go since last year, I replaced the solenoid and temp. switch, but not the relays. Is there any way to get to the relays without taking the battery out? That's a pain. Let me know, it will be much appreciated.

On my 88, there is one screw holding a bracket on the firewall for both relays. I was able to unplug the relays without pulling the battery. It took a little prying with a screwdriver to start the plugs out of the bottom of the relay. The new relays were the same part number but would not mount with the old bracket. I made a bracket out of a piece of metal. These relays are controlling the circuit to the M.A.F. sensor or code 34. EGR circuit is code 32. I was able to get the relays from a Chev dealer at mechanics price of $8 each. Cheap fix if it works.

Thanks for your response. I was thinking of changing these anyway. Glad to here you were able to do it without removing the battery. Mine is definitely a Code 32, an egr valve is about 52.00, but taking the plenum off is a pain. If a shop does it, it may cost a couple hundred bucks. This may not solve the problem, then I would really be mad. Just looking for more possibilities without going that route.

As for the relays not fitting in the bracket; sorry, forgot to tell you that you have to pop the new relays out of the aftermarket bracket and insert them into the original bracket. They will fit in, that's what I had to do...
There is of course a chance this procedure has already been done in the past so I'm not sure what bracket you actually have on your car.
I think removing the battery makes this job easier...
4000 miles since I did this and no SES light yet...

The bracket was east to make. Ran the car again today, and , no light. YET. Got my fingers crossed. It must be my month for check engine light. It just came on in my 91 Chev Corsica. This one's got to be cheaper to repair, I hope.
