well, about an hour or so ago the flatbed backed into the driveway with my new project car, the '78.
It's a very low milage car, with only 9,389 original miles!
Unfortunately, she has been negleted and not used for quite some time. In the last 3 years she has probably only been driven twice, the last time just over a year ago than parked and not touched since. worst, she has been parked outside for at least the last two years, if not more.
The interior is in overall pretty good shape and very little needs to be done there. The frame is super solid and looks great with barely even any surface rust at all.
The two main problem areas are the engine compartment which needs a MAJOR freshening up and the paint which needs a complete new paint job. At least on the paint the body is obsolutely perfect, never been hit, so the paint shouldn't be too bad to strip off the old and repaint her. Even the rubber bumpers are still fitting real nice.

As soon as she was in the garage I threw in a brand new battery. She cranked but didn't start right away (no big surprise) so I hit the carb with some starter fluid and she cranked a bit more than fired up. A bit of white smoke thru the exhaust at first than it cleared up and run clean with no smoking. I'm betting the white smoke was the starter fluid.
She run fine if I hit the gas a bit but doesn't want to stay running real well at idle plus the accelerator linkage is screwed up because if I push down on the accerator pedel it doesn't come right back up by itself, I need to pull it back up with my toe under the pedal. Actually, I think it may be the rod or something else because if I rev it directly from the inkage on the carb she returns fine.

Got to check operations on everything. All rear tailights work, all blinkers work, brake lights worl, PW and PDL work, radio works and power antenna, guages all work except for the clock (another big surprise :) ). The headlights wouldn't come up so I'll have to check out the vacuum system but the WS wipers work fine along with the rear defrost and the entire heating and AC system.
The weatherstripping all looks good.

Tires and brakes are brand new, done last year when it was driven once - it had gone to the service shop than returned home and has sat since and during that service, among other things they put on new brakes and new tires so both only have basically about 20 miles on them.

car came included with the standard body colored t-tops AND a second set of the smoked glass/mirrored t-tops plus a car cover, and the best part........... full documentation from the previous two owners including the original window sticker, service records, old registration forms, original warranty info, etc.

the last time the car was registered was in '97 and it's only had 2389 miles put on it since '97! The last title was listed at 7000 miles.

It's going to be a fun project to bring this low milage girl back to her deserved glory. :)

Sounds like a nice car. First thing is to bleed the brakes, BF sitting that long will turn to mud and regardless of how many miles are on them or if they're SS lined they will give you a problem.
Check for oil pressure and leaks at the engine or tranny.

Good luck I was looking for 1978 or 79 4 spd, without an engine to build into a nice street cruiser.

I just fired up the brand new ZZ383 crate motor in my 78 Vette project today and it sounds great, actually kinda radical, with a little more cam lope at idle than I expected.
I also just installed a new TCI streetfighter 350 auto trans with a 2500 rpm converter and 3.70 gears along with a new composite rear spring and 4 Koni shocks.
I live in Alaska and the weather is still too nasty to drive it yet.
Here's a few pics including some from today. Let me know what you think ??????

Very nice Kevin! I have to say my fave pic is the one of the engine on the stand with the side pipe flowing off to the side....

it's funny, the last time the car was driven, it was taken into a local Corvette specialty shop and had all new brakes, brake fluid, new tires, and a load of other service work performed and than it was brought home and parked and hadn't moved since.
On the service order it was even written that the cutomer wanted everything checked thru and working properly because he was considering selling the car. The seller told be this was a year ago but now that I have all the paperwork I looked it over and that last service was dated 3/04 so that was actually two years ago. So........ I'm now assuming the car has been sitting untouched and undriven for two years, not one year!

no matter, I'll be going thru EVERYTHING on the car. I don't go thru NCRS jusdging but I plan on doing this car like my '65 which is basically to as close to NCRS level quality as I can do, with everything not only functioning correctly, but also looking as good as possible.

Luckily, the frame is super solid, the chassis looks great underneath except for a bunch of spiderwebs and loose crap that has blown in just from being outside these last few years. The more I look at it the more I confirm to myself that it's really just a clean-up job - it's a MAJOR clean-up job, but really just a clean-up job although this one may involve having to pull the motor out to get the motor and engine bay cleaned up to the level that I want it to be.
I think the rough idle and the headlights that didn't work the first time I tried them (they eventually did later on) is a vaccum system issue so I'll check thru the whole system on that also of course. Besides, after sitting for two years if that's what it really was, than I have no doubt the carb needs a real good cleaning also!

Sounds like fun,Barry!!!!!! keep us posted of the progress!!!!!!!!:upthumbs

Bill
if you go to my website, addy is in my profile and in my siggy, you will see that I photo document EVERYTHING that I've done to my '65 and I'll be doing the same on the '78.
I already started a whole new section of the website for the '78 :)
so far it's only pics from back in Dec when I first went to look at the car, but as soon as I start working on her I'll have everything in there step by step

COOL!!!! thanks for heads up!!!

Barry,

After watching you dig into all the work on your '65 and your total enjoyment that you get from the car, I can't wait to see how much fun you have with the '78

Forget about selling the car in the future. Linda likes the car already and the two of you will have a blast with it. The best thing I ever did was to make sure my wife had a vette too. We were already deep into the hobby and this just made it more fun and personal for her. This will make a great long distance car for the two of you....it even has A/C!

Take care,
Brian

Hi Brian

well, working on the '65 was enjoyable at times, and other times.........well, let just say a bit less than enjoyable! ;LOL

This '78 is going to be a much larger challenge though, I can already see that and I would welcome the relative simplicity of another C2 project.

Yep, Linda is already very excited about the car. If there is any way we can end up affording to keep the '78 rather than sell it afterwards I'd like to do that so she has a "toy" also but it's just going to be a wait and see thing.
