My LT1 should use Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil. Is there any other synthetic oils I can use? Mobil 1 synthetic Oil is not sold at every oil changing place. But they do sell different types of synthetic oil. One place I went to tried to sell me PensOil synthetic. Who makes the best oil filter.

This weekend I plan to change some fluids. I need help in
get the right stuff.

Reggie,

First of all I do not know enough about the specs of other synthetic oil to compare them to Mobil 1. If it's an option for you, the Chevy dealers use Mobil 1 and a GM filter, just like it came with from Bowling Green.

This is what I do with my LT1 since I currently don't have a proper place do the service myself.

Oil changes

I live in Lawrenceville GA. Where do you go for oil changes? How much is the cost? What weight of oil do you use for GA weather?

Probably not very convenient for you but I get my service done at Tom Jumper Chevrolet in Roswell. I've had some other work done here (opti spark, window motor) and I was happy with service.

I don't know who's in your area but I was drawn to Tom Jumper because they move a large volume of Vettes through their lot and likely see a good number in their service bays. Maxi Price in Monroe is the largest volume Vette dealer in the area and might be closer to you.

For weight I run 5W30 year round and the total cost is about $50.

Best Oil is Red Line 10W30. Next best is Mobil 1 10W30.
Do not use 5W30 if you want best durability.

Best Oil Filter is a toss-up between the K&N Peformance Gold and the Mobil 1 Oil Filter. Acceptable are Wix and ACDelco. Do not use Fram.

Best Transmission Fluid is Red Line Synthetic D4 ATF. Next best is Mobil's synthetic ATF.

Change your oil every 7500 miles but change the oil filter at half that, ie: two filters for every crankcase change.

Do those things and your 92's powertrain will last a very long time.

I have been around here long enough to know this guy is giving you the best info there is!!! Might try buying your own oil and filters, find a lube shop that will charge you for the service only??

Quaker state synthetic is very good.
5-30 is ok for all around driving. If you like to drive at high speeds or like to wind it out, use 10-30.
For the tranny, Quaker State makes a semi-synthetic ATF which is good.
Any name brand filter is OK.

Good luck with the car!

Have you asked if you can bring your own oil and filter to where you have the work done?? Most places should allow that if they don't carry your desired brand of oil and just charge you for the labor and any disposal fees.

As others mentioned, the LT1 motors came factory filled with Mobil-1 in 5W30. The owner's manual says the LT1 motor requires an oil that meets the GM4718M standard for synthetic oils. Look at the various brands of synthetics and see if you can find that standard mentioned somewhere on the label. Besides Mobil-1, I think that the Quaker State synthetic meets that standard. A couple years ago, I recall seeing it listed on the PennZoil synthetic oil, but it is no longer listed on that label.

As far as Red Line goes, there has been much debate on other forums as to whether or not it meets the GM4718M standard. It is good oil but it's pricey and it is pretty hard to find at local auto parts stores.

If you want to use Mobil-1, look for it at places like K-Mart, Costo, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club or such whenever it goes on sale. Then stock up so you can save money. If you do your own changes, it will get even cheaper!! I do my own changes and I have it down to just a 2-beer job :D
