A member is having issues with the red x showing up in place of his photos in threads when he (or visitors he sent the links to) are not logged in.

I've checked all his photo attachments and I'm able to view them so I'm stumped.

Other than site "cookies" can anyone else think of a reason preventing the images from showing?

What I am seeing now is that the pictures I have used on the CAC (with the exception of the avatar) cannot be seen by me (when not logged in) or by another non-CAC member viewer whom I recently contacted for a check (who is obviously not logged in). All we get under those conditions is the dreaded "red X" icon where the picture is supposed to be. Both of us see the other members' pictures fine however - leading me to think there's something about the pictures (I've checked that they were not something like read-only before the upload) or the attachment/insert method that I am still doing wrong. Hoping you can be of some more help - thanks in advance!
After I've logged into the CAC site, everything's fine... Hmmm.

Yes, tried that right-click trick: absolutely nothing happens.

New bit of info: when I log out, even though the CAC message says otherwise, I still have two cookies from CAC in my machine. As long as I have those cookies, everything works fine; when the cookies are deleted (deliberately and manually cleared) then we're back to the problem. The main idea that I keep having is that ONLY MY images which are the troublemakers: in at least one of the threads I checked, where you had made my thumbnail into a full-size pic on YOUR post - THAT picture disappeared with the cookies not present on my machine. But the other members' pictures came through fine. And as stated previously, the third-party (non-CAC member) I contacted for a check could not see MY full-size images either.

I also tried this on a second (laptop) PC with exactly the same results.

Stumped for now...

I'm not sure I understand completely, but I do know that if I am not logged in, I do not see any attached photo's, I don't remember for sure if I see photo's that are inbedded using another source e.g. Imageshack, Photobucket etc. I don't think I do see them.

note: whenever I leave the Corvette Action Center I Log Out (that should remove the cookies), and log back in when I return ;shrug it's always been like for me ;shrug

Like I said my input probably doesn't answer your question or solve you problem, but it might not be a problem it may be design ;shrug

Thanks Yoda - you've given me an idea to try: uploading one of my pix from another website rather than from my PC, and see what happens.
Hope nobody minds if I use this thread for a test, can always edit/delete later.

I - like yourself - will log out before exiting the CAC website. I do see the message that cookies have been deleted, but it is not so on my desktop machine here. Two cookies from CAC remain, but that may be another issue, and not critical at the moment.

Picture test

This picture will be uploaded from another website, not my PC. (i.e. did not use the "Manage Attachments" button, used a direct URL from the Insert Image button.

Partial succes...

Well, well, well... Interesting.
The previous post's picture (as stated therein) was inserted into the message using only the 'Insert Image' button on the message editor here; In preparation for this, I had moved a picture from my PC to my personal website, and used that URL as the picture's address - not using the 'Manage Attachments' button at all.

After I exited IE, once again manually and deliberately cleared all cookies (four remained from CAC after I was advised "All cookies cleared"...), then came back to this page, and lo and behold the picture is there...!

Perhaps it's time for somebody else to scratch their head over this; in the meantime, I shall try to edit my previous posts to use pictures from my personal website, in a continuation of this experiment.

Thanks for all your input, guys and girls!

Eric

I played around a bit and here is my observations :D

Logged Out
  • I could not view any "Attached items"
  • Even copying the url I could not view the photo (Attached items)
  • The first post in each thread had general information to the RIGHT of the text of the first post.
  • I COULD see photo's that were uploaded to the Gallery and personal photo albums here at the Action Center and photo's from other sites e.g. photobucket, imageshack etc.
  • I could also see signatures and avatars.

Thanks for taking the time Bud (Yoda? I'm the newbie here, what's the convention..?)

What you were seeing agrees with my assessment. If you've noticed my just-previous thread entry, it seems I've gotten around the "problem" (still don't know if this is by design or not) by using a URL pointing at my personal website as the source for the picture file. (I had to upload those pictures to said personal website first, of course.)

Now I can see "my" full-sized images whether I am logged in or not, even with all cookies cleared. If possible could you revisit this thread and take a look at where I posted Miss Scarlett's image using this new method?

Appriciate all the involvement -

Eric

:w Eric,

I see Miss Scarlett just fine ;) and she is a good looker too :o

My guess is that seeing the attachments are for members only. As with anything now days, numbers count.. Advertisers like to see large membership numbers when investing their $$ with an online Forum..

Which is really rather sad, when you take a look around the Corvette Action Center and see all that is within these web walls ;) The forums are actually a very small portion of what is documented here, BUT it is a fantastic draw for immediate help and support of our Hobby.

To really take a tour of the entire property takes a few hours, seriously there is that much going on here and information to be found. It is so much more than most folks realize :dance

Ok I'll step back from podium.

The "convention" (CruiseFest) is the Corvette Action Center's annual gathering. This year will be the 6th (I think). We started them in 2004 after being online for 4 years or so. The first one was in Auburn, IN second one at Bowling Green as was the third one. The fourth was at Colorado Springs, CO, last year was at Cleveland, OH. This year we are heading back to Bowling Green, KY.

Here is a LINK to the 2009 CruiseFest Forum The registration and events schedule should be out soon ;)

Thanks for asking and enjoy the :Steer

Thanks for nice words re: Miss Scarlett - and the info.

While doing a bit more cursory poking around while not logged in, it appeared that the pictures which were still visible had links to an "outside" source, according to their 'properties', reinforcing your statement about the attachments (stored at the CAC website) are members-only. (You were doing just fine on that podium...!) From the advertising standpoint, it would seem to me the membership numbers would not change depending on whether the member was logged in or not - but perhaps it's time for me to step off that podium now; I am certainly no marketing expert. Ah - it just clicked: we would want folks to become members in order to take full advantage of the site. Little slow tonight.

I certainly agree with the mountains of info - and entertainment! - available here; I am still overwhelmed, in fact.

Errrr.... I inadvertantly got much more information than I was looking for: I DO appreciate the CruiseFest info - but... when I used the word "convention", I was only asking if it was more correct on this forum to address you as "Bud" or "Yoda". Oops.

Safe journeys ---- Eric
