Here is a short and sweet background.

Bought the car in december of 02 in toranto(i live in indiana). Car ran fine the whole drive back and ran good for almost 3 weeks. Then it started knocking so i took to local shop which charged me 6k to rebuild it(i paid 8 for car). When i got it back in july(yes it took em 7 months to rebuild) the oil pressure was always between 1 and 5 and they told me had to be the gage and the fact that it didnt have hardly anymore more power then the stock motor i knew something was wrong....So i went to www.tabertouch.com and bought a used engine out of an 88 and had them put it in(only 2500). and the same thing started happening again they told me that when ever the guy who owned the car put in stero/amp they clipped the engine/coolent temp sensory and that made the computer think it was always at -34f??? sounds weird to me cause the gauge always read 220 ish when warmed up. but they got that wire fixed and now average mpg which started at 12.4 3 weeks latter is now at 9.2 and going down everytime i drive it. the average mpg will also every few seconds flash from 9.x to 1.2 then back.......and the oil temp always says lo if you get out on highway at sustained speed IE 70mph for 30mintues or so it will bounce to like 155 or so but slow down or change speed any and it goes to lo again so i am sure the guage is working. and one last thing the car doesnt seem to have as much power as what i would expect from a vette my brother has a 86 bone stock mustang gt that can detroy me through every gear range. sorry so long winded but i have now with purchase and engines over 22k in a car with 8 even though i know i should sell it has now become my mission in life to see this thing running perfect ive put to much in to bail out now.......

thanks

Terl,

Wow...what a headache!

Okay, it sounds to me as if your wire harness and vacuum harness are both messed up.

You need to purchase a GM factory repair manual. It is worth every penny.

You need to trace your harness back.

A bad vaccuum connection will send your system in a loop, and a bad or broken ground wire will cause all kinds of ghost problems.

This is going to be an easy fix when all is said and done. However, finding the problem will be the needle in a haystack.

You are just going to have to keep posting your symptoms, and tracking down leads one by one to solve this.

Good luck, and let us know how we can help.

The Haunted 86

The first thing I would do is contact ACI Corvette restorations in Toledo, Ohio before doing anything else. These guys not only restore cars but repair them too, and have a good reputation.

Be patient and deal with one problem at a time, I'm sure you will find the problem. Get the GM manual, it is handy to have. You Can order a re-print from a company called Helminc.com and click on "aftermarket" also a company called Alldata.com has this stuff online for a small yearly fee of $24.00.

Hope this info helps,

Mark

Also get Gordon Killebrew's book on the digital dash. It explains how to test and fix almost everything.

Good Luck!!
