Does the TT have the same thermostat as the regular L98 motors? If not What is the dif? Has anyone tried a cooler one?

I know Callaway4fun put in a lower (160) Thermostat and Fan Switch and he says it runs much cooler. I believe it has a stock Thermostat... a 180... which I just pulled from my car and put in a 160 degree in its place.

I am also in the middle of replacing the Turbo Coolant lines (you might also want to check out this thread Click Here ) so I will have to wait until I put everything back before I tell how if it made a difference. It did in my GNX.

As Luigi mentioned, Pete (Callaway4fun) has replaced his thermostat (and added a "burp" air hole) and a lower temp fan switch - He said it made a HUGE difference!
I need to do this to my car before Carlisle :)
I am sure Pete will chime in with sources and details on this :beer

The factory stat is a 195 degree stat . I changed my stat and also changed the fan switch. The factory switch is a 215 degree fan switch . That means the fan does not come on until it reaches that temp. I changed mine to a 185 degree switch the car runs much cooler. I did this because I did not like how hot the car got . Heat is not a friend of aluminum heads. Also Callaway recommends putting in a bleed hole in the stat.

Pete - do any of these sound right??

"Cool it down

Chevrolet/Pontiac: 1983-92 305/350/2.8L, Camaro/Firebird, 1984-90 Corvette, 1985-88 Fiero, 180 degree, cool fan switch

Hypertech Cool Fan Switches are designed to be used with ThermoMaster Power Chips for increased horsepower. In some vehicles, the electric cooling fans are controlled by the computer chip, but in others, the cooling fans are controlled by the fan switch (which is usually set to turn on at about 220 degrees F). These Cool Fan switches will enable you to replace your OEM thermostat sensor with a 160 or 180 degrees temperature sensor.

Sold individually."

Chris take your pick Just remember the lower the fan switch the longer it will take to get to temperature in cooler weather. The fan switch I have turns off at 185 degrees and I believe it turns on at 195 as compared to 215 with the factory setup.

I happened to speak to Jim Jones at Callaway today. I mentioned that I had put in a 160 degree thermostat and was going to replace the fan switch. He mentioned that Callaway did not recommend going that low... they prefer to use a 180 degree thermostat (which is what was in there).

As for the fan switch, he mentioned that in the 91 (my car) they control the fan from the ECM and not from the temperature sensor on the block. I have to replace the connector on my existing temperature sensor anyways as it has become brittle and cracked. He recommended using the stock flat female connector instead of going to the cap type connector on the temp sensor like hypertech uses. I also have some concerns (I already bought the hypertech) because it is rather close to the turbo up-pipe and with the hypertec temp sensor wire it might hit the passenger side turbo up-pipe.

It is possible in my car that the temp sensor wire was intermittently working and thus the higher temperatures. A pic of my temp sensor (w/out turbo up pipe can be seen here )

Just an FYI...

Luigi - I know my 89 (regular) coupe, the fan(s) control is through the chip - w/ the aftermarket chip in, it runs much cooler - I wonder if it worth sending my chip back (or getting an updated one) through Callaway - Are you going to be discussing this further w/ Jim??

Thanks :m

Ohh, FWIW - when I had a problem w/ a temp sensor, it was the one under the TB that is in the front of the intake manifold - Not on my B2K but didn't know if u knew there are 2...

Thanks for the info. I obviously know where the one is between cyls 6 & 8 but was not sure of where the other one was.

I have made arrangements to trailer to Old Lyme after Carlisle and have them give my car a look/tune. It hasn't been there since it was upgraded in '93. So while I am in the region, it is probably worth to swing by. Changes to the chip are most likely forthcoming.

my heat was running normal. with outside temp in low to mid 80's i read half way to one notch below on highway. in city stop and go i do read above halfway by a couple of notches. jim jones told me he reset my ecm to turn on fan at 220 instead of 228 when they serviced my car two weeks ago. once my fan goes on thats it. it nerver turns off. (except mid winter) comments??????

Mine runs cool all the time. It has a 180 degree thermostat (installed by Callaway) and a Ron Davis aluminum radiator installed by AS&M when the car lived in Arizona. I'm really not to sure about the fan switch but I think it's been programmed to turn on sooner... not sure exactly what temp.

This weekend, I am doing the hoses and putting a 180 deg. thermostat in the original housing - w/ a "bleed hole"

Still has copper/brass radiator - ordered SEO Z5G spoiler...
