Time for a Tune Up

Well it is almost spring and i figure i should maybe treat the car to a tune up. I was wandering what you all use. I have always run AC Delco plugs. However this time instead of the stock replacement coil i was thinking maybe an Accel super coil, or how about some MSD products. I dont know much about the MSD 5 or 6, does anyone use these products, and if so how hard are they to install.

Guess you already have the K&N and cut lid, right? I went with Accel super coil and wire set, factory plugs.

I actually went ahead and installed ram air. I clean the filter on a regular basis.

a tune up never hurts ,i use the moroso plug wires and moble 1 oil
and change the transmission fluid and the differential fluid too
and a nice grease job never hurts anything ie wheel bearings/ etc

If you have a TPI intake, that high-power ignition stuff is pretty much a waste of money.

You can have major mods and still run plain old GM stuff with no losses.

It's good to know this. If you check a catalog, they try to sell this stuff like it will make the car run like a rocket. Something like installing OEM style mufflers and gaining 15-20 horsepower :L :L :L

I'm not Vader, but I'll guess that stickers can add up to 5% hp per sticker! I have this yellow Chevy sticker here that I'm planning to install when the weather gets warm enough. And when I do, watch out Ferrari Enzo!

Yep, that fancy ignition stuff won't do well on a TPI because those are for engines that make power beyond the 6500 rpm range. Our TPI's make the majority of our power lower in the rpm band.

If you put a 'Type R' sticker on the rear, youve got 20hp just from that.

Each Summit and Accel sticker is worth 5.

Im going to disagree heavy as far as High power ignition doing nothing with TPI.

Myself, I have the MSD 6A w/ external Blaster 2 coil, MSD 8.8 Wires and Platnium plugs (The +4's)

First of all the most pleasant difference was the INCREASE in fuel mileage. Im talking 2-4 MPG on the freeway putting my car over 28MPG.

I made it from Abbotsford BC (Vancouver area) to Calgary on 1 1/2 tank.

Edmonton to Jasper and BACK on exactly one tank.

People that I talk to don't believe me either until they find out first hand.

Now in order to do it you have to baby it the second you throw some throttle down, adios mileage which brings me to this

Increase in acceleration....

I noticed a significant difference in acceleration. My car never really pushed you into your seat and now your can feel a slight push. (Sorry I got no numbers Ive only been once after the install).

The main thing is yes it is a HIGH power system pushing 60% more spark per stroke. But the really cool part is..It hit the plugs 3 times per stroke instead of once. Your burning EVERY drop of gasoline none left waste.

IMHO I love the system and Ive installed the same system 4 times now for friends and family they love it to except ONE guy.

He didn't go MSD he went Crane FireBall and the system performs great but we are on our 3rd Crane Coil now...Don't know why yet still working on it.

Do it Once - Right

The only thing I have to add to this bashing is most everything works well brand new. If you change it often there is no gain in premium components. I don't mind fooling around with my 67, but I am sure I don't want to change plugs and/or other ignition parts any more often than I have to in the 92. It will get only the best.

i look at it this way..... there will be a time when you need performance parts like this. for a bone stock setup you don't need it. add a cam and some other bolt ons and race the car alot you'll eventually want it just to set the 2 rev limiters for some easy trick racing

my setup is this.

Accel supercoil.
Taylor 8mm wires.
new rotor from pep boys.
AC Delco Rapid Fire plugs gapped .047

i played with my timing and bumped it to 12 degrees advanced which is on the high side with 6 degrees advanced being factory setting. some say -2 - 0 degrees to 12 degrees advanced. myself i'm on the edge of knock. i run minimum 93 octane.

Current Mods:
Mostly stock all free mods K&N open air box, MAF descreened, TB Bypassed, 160* T-Stat, Accel Super Coil, 12* degree advance timing, new front Y pipe with no pre-cats, and No Mufflers. Hayden Tranny cooler. Stock 1600 rpm stall and a 2.59 rear gear.

for me i am on the edge of needing a MSD 6A box just because i can set a rev limiter because the L98 cars didn't have them. i will wire it up so i can set 1 step at 3500 rpm for burnouts and set the throttle step at 5800 rpm. in a few months when i put my LT1 converted intake on i'll do the rocker arm swap and bump the throttle step to around 6300-6500 rpm plus the hotter spark won't hurt things either

just deciding when i should do the intake swap. should i wait till i get a set of heads so i can add my ZZ409 cam in? already got a short block almost ready to go. or do it after i bottom out the stock setup i'm running?
