Timing gear on crank, When to install

My brother in law has a 71 that he is redoing the motor on. He has the fresh ground crank back in the block and now realizes that the lower timing gear isn't installed. Can you safely install the gear with the crank already in the block? When I did mine I had the gear installed when the crank was redone. Thanks for any help.

yes you can install the gear while it is in the block not a big deal at all Steve
