Timing Trouble

Do not improvise a damper removal tool.

Buy a harmonic damper/balancer removal tool intended for use with Chevrolet engines. Also, beware of what you buy. If you go to Autozone or Pep Boys and buy a cheap, Chinese-made tool, don't be surprised if it breaks or lasts only a few uses then fails.

Do not use a gear puller which grips the balancer on the outside rim. You'll damage or destroy the balancer during the attempted removal.

When reinstalling a balancer use a tool designed for installing harmonic balancers. DO NOT attempt to "press" the new balancer on using any kind of impact device.

Once the old balancer is removed, inspect the crankshaft snout for damage and to make sure the keyway and the key are in place and not damaged.

Good advice from Hib. The finest damper install tool I know of can be found here (harmonic balancer install kit) http://www.bhjinc.com/1products/0-landing.htm ... I have BHJ's HB-1 tool and it's better than any others I've seen or used ... very well made right here in USA ... pricey, but built to last. BHJ also has some other very nice auto machine shop tooling ... and they make darn good dampers to boot! I have another damper tool ... it's of asian manufacture ... marketed by proform & many others ... I've been known to loan the taiwan tool ... but not the bhj.

if you're on the right wire the very front one on the drivers side then i would check to see that the rubber on the balancer has not gone bad causing the outer ring to slip, or someone has replaced the balancer w/ a later model balancer locates the timing mark at top (ctr of t/cover)
