I make it a habit of routinely checking my Ignition wires, plugs, distributor cap, and coil for shorts/grounds. On my 1970 BB, i have an MSD6 Box with HVC hi-output Coil and this set up makes the Ignition parts carry alot of voltage ; doesnt take much for a wire to short to another wire or a valve cover or in my latest case....the Coil wire to my air cleaner base. Didnt happen all the time either, but, i suspected something was going on.
Anyways, what i do is run the engine on my Rhino Ramps when its pitch black outside (using a flashlight to see where im walking) , and have a good long look at the Ignition parts for 'a lazer light show' ; i do this from the topside and from underneath . It takes some patience cause like i said, sometimes it doesnt happen consistently . But, ive found this to be a great way to keep tabs on the system.
I might add, that, ive tried Moroso's deluxe 40 ohm/ft wire set, Taylors 409 super thick 11 mm wire set, and a few others....and the ONLY one that prevented spark jump from the wires , were the 8.8 mm MSD deluxe wire set .
Regards.
