When the weather went from hot down to the 60's my tire sensors showed low presure . I aired them up and things seemed fine for awhile . Now it's in the 20's and the DIC shows low on all four again . Doe's the temperature make this much difference or are my tires starting to loose air due to age . @25,000 miles . Cliff

Tire pressure

The colder it gets-the pressure goes down--I lost 2lbs.--I keep them at at 30lbs.---:w

Think of your physics lessons for (hot) water. As the temperature rises the water molecules get excited and expand. In a closed container like your radiator that’s increased pressure. Air in your tire reacts the same way as water in the radiator, higher temperatures, thus higher pressures.:Twist

Most tire information out there says you loose or gain approximately 1 pound of pressure for every 10 degree change in outside temperature. 30 degree drop amounts to about 3 lbs drop in pressure.

Cliff - I just went out & got a very good tire gauge. With the colder air ( 20's & 30's) here in Ct, the tire pressure was at 27 lbs.
I checked first thing in morning, cold, and inflated to 30psi.

Yep, same here. I was running about 27LBS this weekend. Added a few pounds.

Yep, it has to do with the temps dropping. Sometimes in the morning when it is cold my rear tires say there is only 25 psi. I put air in them and it still says that , but after a while it says 30 psi.

Well ,ok guys , let me ask you this then . After I go a few miles the preasure goes up a couple of pounds . Of course , thats because of the tires heating up , right ? So should we air up to 30# cold as foodguy did or 28# allowing for the change . I realize this isn't alot of difference , but hey , we're talking Corvettes here . Cliff

According to the tire "experts", tire pressure is supposed to be checked cold; less then 1 mile driven. That is the advise that I follow since they are the experts; I'm not.:D

There was a thread awhile back ( I can not remember what the guy's name was ) and he was talking about the excessive wear on the center of the rear tires and inside of the fronts. :( He was going to lower the pressure in the rears to see if that made a difference in the excessive wear. It would seem right that if you inflated to 30 lb. cold and it heated up to 34-35 that you would get excessive wear in the center. ( Our summers get to 95 -100 ). I would like to know if this is working for you. I have been running 27lb. and they heat up to 30-31lb in the summer. It is now approaching winter so I will increase up to 28 -29lb and see if this keeps it at 30lb when heated up. I hope this keeps the excessive center wear down. :)

In general, you will loose about 1 psi for every 10 degress drop in temperature. With a good gauge check the tires cold ( Less that i mile of driving) and keep them at 30psi.
Good Luck
Tom
