I am purchasing new tires for my 1996 LT1. They are the new Cooper Zeon 2XS. I am getting all 4 for $635 mounted and balanced. The front tires of course are 255/45-17 and the rears are supposed to be 285/40-17. The only problem is that Cooper only makes a 275/40-17. Will this be a problem? The tire dealer says the only difference is the width of the tire is about 1/4 of an inch less. Thanks for your help.

This is not a problem. Generally, the 275 and 285 can be interchanged.

Checking tirerack.com for specs of different tires, the 275/40/17 has a diameter range of 25.6-25.9. The 285's I found there generally run 26 to 26.1.

I have used both the 285 and 275 on my car at different times.

BTW, in 96, the Z51 equiped Vettes (except Grand Sports) came with 275/40/17 on all four corners with 9.5 wheels.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. One more question though. Should I take the sensors off the rims since I will not be running the runflats anymore? Thanks again!

Yes and then send them to me!!! ;)

I have the sensors in my wheels and I don't have run-flats. I like the idea of knowing when a tire is going down and not finding out about it later. The sensors will save you a tire if you keep them.

Remind the tire changes that it has the sensors - they are located 180 degrees from the valve stem.

Thanks Tuna! One of the sensors may be bad because when I bought the car the LTPWS light was on constantly with inflated tires. So...I took the fuse out since the cruise control is out of commission anyway. Thanks again!
