I am interested in upgrading my 4-speed muncie a 5 or 6 speed manual that can offfer me better highway proformance. Problem- My stock '70 LS5 (390 hp 500bl-ft torque) is a rare, High optioned, all numbers matching car, including trany. I do not want to do any irreversable damage. Is there a bolt-in application that can be installed?

Thanks for the tip Ken, it sound like this is what I am looking for.

Since you want a "bolt in", I imagine the T56 is out (I see no real advantage with 2 OD gears anyway) and the TKO series is probably your best bet. I'd suggest the TKO-600 over the TKO-500 due to the closer 1-2 ratios. I also imagine that the 3.27 1'st in the TKO-500 would be pretty useless with that much torque.

Hey John,
Got that website updated yet?
How about a long term update on how the new 6 spd trans is doing? Still likin' it? Anything you'd do different?

thanks

Hi Lone73,

No regrets on 6 speed, cost wise there was very little difference between it and the performance 5 speeds, but I will say that aluminum shifter puts a smile on my face when ever I get into the car. I like having two overdrives @ 75MPH in 6th my engine is only at approx 1500 rpm, 5th is the same as the tremics and is a very comfortable gear for highway speeds. I have no idea what the top end is right now it will probably remain a mystery.

I think the 5 speeds are an easier installation, just because all of the parts are available and there is not much fabrication needed. I lost count on the number of trips under my vet to bolt in the cross member to check fit, cut or alignment. I think this was the biggest pain for me I was sore for a few days (sucks to get old).

My html files for the installation are done and ready to upload, I have been battling a malware virus for around three weeks now I can seem to get rid of it completely (about:blank) I will get the web site posted soon.

With the Tremec TKO lineup, you can get a .68 (TKO500), .82 (TKO600), or .62 (TKO600) 5'th gears.
The T-56 will either have a .74/.5 or .80/.62 5'th/6'th gears, so I belive the above statement to not be true.

Thanks, Got it bookmarked!
