Torque Conveter Delay Harness

I'm looking at this torque converter lock-up delay harness in Ecklers catalog. Has anyone installed one of these? The 82 just drives me nuts locking up at very low speeds. Someone told me this harness works like a champ but I was wondering if anyone here has it and how easy is it to install? Of course the catalog say installs in minutes.

Thanks

I just called Ecklers and the part has been discontinued. I've searched the web (MAD, Corvette Central, Ricks, Zip etc), but I can't find anyone else who has these.

Anyone know where I could find one of these?

Thanks
Guy

Guy,
I would suggest putting in a "Hypertech Thermaster Chip" & a 160 degree thermostat. The chip changes the converter lock up point, and does a bunch of performance mods to ignition timing & fuel mixtures. It is also an invisiable to NCRS judges!!! I have one in my 82 and I have put them in 2 other 82s for people and they LOVED the change in the cars drivabilaty. DON'T buy it thru Ecklers!! Call Summit Racing (1-800-230-3030). If memory serves me correct, the chip goes for around $125. The 160 degree thermostat can be purchased locally.

And for his first post! About time you started posting over here old friend! Jim, I don't know why I forgot about that idea but it sounds like the better way to go. I'll call Summit

Thanks again and welcome to the :CAC.

Guy.... save the money and go buy a 12V lighted SPST switch from your local Radio Shack (not an endorsement for Radio Shack). I removed my useless window defroster switch and put the new switch in the same slot on the console. I wired the switch to the brake release circuit. So what do I have? I get her up to speed, 45+, hit the switch........ voila!!! One TCC electronically LOCKED on. It stays on and will NOT pop in and out EVER until I turn the switch off. The lighted switch makes it easy to tell when it's on. It's a three wire set up. Now........... I did this many YEARS ago and I'll have to dig through my manual to see if I still have the altered schematic to show you where to cut and splice the wires. It's a piece of cake. Now also since you have a 700R4 tranny and I have a bullet proof TH350, I'll make the assumption (for now) that the wiring is the same for the release circuit.

Bob, I've heard of others doing what you did, but I was not sure if I understood.

Thanks
Guy

Stay tuned Guy, I'll look this weekend.

ours used to do this and we had the torque converter lock up solonoid, our would tend to lockup really early and not want to unlock but it also did the searching thing as well.

I re-wired the TCC IAW instructions that Nut, Evariste, and I believe even Tom had posted in the L81 forum, and it works like a charm; however, I replaced the solenoid first. The gasket between the valvebody and solenoid was allowing fluid to leak internally, and it made the tranny operate erratically.

Did you experience how the tranny would lead or lag the rear end? It makes a anoying sound, especially on coast-down. The problem with wiring it to dis-engage is that it will use a little bit more gas, but I believe that it is not much when using the stock converter.

I haven't tried one or know of anyone who has but painless wiring make's what look's like a real good set-up.About 40.00 just my 2 cent's

Yeah - Like an 18-wheeler in the wrong gear:D. I don't care about fule economy, it would be worth it.

Toppless - I've have no problem with it unlocking. For what I hear mine acts normal, but I'd rather it not lock up at low speeds.:gap

Hotrodd - I should have bought one of these thing when someone first told me about them - now you can't find them.

Nut is looking for his copy of the instructions and I'll also seach the L81 forums.

Thanks Everyone.

Guy,

While your looking through the Summit book you'll find a lock-up delay kit made by Painless for the 400R transmission. There is no kit for the TH350 unfortunately.

Thanks, Dale! Good to hear from you! I don't have a catalog, but I'll look it up on the Summit web site.

Hope all is well in KY!

All is well Guy...........best of all "NO SNOW"
I've searched Summit and I don't see the delay kit for the TH400. I'm almost certain that I've seen it somewhere..........I'll keep looking.

I think I found it, but it's a $125 item :eek.

Guy - sending snow your way:D.

Yeah all of that stuff seems to come with a hefty price tag........
Guy - sending snow your way.
Now Guy, you MUST under no circumstances send snow......the 67 Ford plow truck is being restored now and is unavailble for the rest of 2003.

Guy,

Your email was correct. Tie into the Purple wire from the brake switch and find a 12V hot for the light in the switch and you're good to go.

I found that purple wire. Now I have to figure out where to put a switch without drilling etc. I don't have the rear defog, so I can't replace that switch. I'll rig it up so everytime the wife pulls down the vanity mirror it locks up :L.

Guy,

I did not mind to drill a hole on the black plastic air ducting below the driver's side dash portion. The duct has a hole already pointing towards the firewall. I used that hole to route the wire to the purple wire hook-up. It works fine.
