Since I bought my 2001 Z06 a couple of months ago, I've put about 400 miles on the track and 1700 on the street (driving to the tracks). I'm an experienced driver (and DE instructor), so I bought a new set of OE front rotors and Performance Friction 01 compound race pads. Rears remained stock. This past weekend I took off the wheels to put the stock pads and original rotors back on for the winter; plus I knew that I had warped the rotors and when I last drove the car the brakes felt awful to the point where I didn't want to use them. The attached pictures tell the story.
The inside half of the rotors are not cracked at all. I wonder how much of this damage is due to the cooling (or lack thereof) or very aggressive pad compounds or just cheap GM rotors. You guys and gals that track your cars - ever seen this or heard of this on EO rotors before? On my track-prepared C4 (RIP) I used either Brembo or custom made rotors from Coleman in Michigan for my Brembo setup, and never ever saw rotors fall apart like this, especially with so few miles.
I'm about ready to just leave the car as a garage queen and buy another C4 to make into a track rat. Between the rear end and transmission cooling issues, suspension longevity and now brake components, I'm losing some enthusiasm for the C5. Don't get me wrong - it is far superior to the C4 in every regard, but for economical track use, I'm thinking of taking a step back.
Discuss.
Thanks,
Michael
