:Steer Looking to trade two of my cars for a 79/80 Corvette. NO project cars please. I need a driver. I have a 93 Z-28 and an 87 300ZX to trade. Both cars are in much better than average shape and it shows. I am an adult and have owned these cars long enough to have replaced many parts. So both cars are very dependable and also look very good. They are garaged too.

I am located in Charlotte, N.C. I will be happy to e-mail the pictures I have on both cars if needed. I figure that both my cars are worth in the area of the mid to upper $7,000's retail. So trading for a Vette of equal value is expected. If interested in hearing more my e-mail address is Boeing717Driver@aol.com.

PS: As you know trading for a Z-28 means you still have a V-8!!! And its very clean and nice too!

Thank you for your attention and lets get to trading!

Jeff :v

OK, heres another angle. I will most likely be selling my cars noted above sometime soon anyway. I have made it a goal to do so. So if the idea of a trade is out of the question then I will be actively looking for a C-3 Vette very soon.

Like I said a 79/80 would be my choice. I am willing to pay in the mid to upper $7,000's. Details of the specific car are open just nothing wrecked or abused. I know that I am right near the price for an average car in this year range. That is of course if its not a very low mileage vehicle which I know would demand more money. I am just looking for a nice car, a driver, not one that needs $2,000 or $3,000 spent on it. Just the normal stuff you would expect to relace or fix-up to make it nice.

Also I am willing to travel a reasonable distance to see the right car. I am an airline pilot and can fly for free. That might help out a bit. Let me hear from ya........

I really do have money folks! I sold both of my cars noted above! I am looking for a nice, clean, "no project" 79/80/81 Vette with decent paint and interior. Perfect? No just nice and presentable. I dont mind if the seats are worn as I would like to slowly return the car to its like new condition. My first choice of colors is white/tan, or black/tan. My last choice is silver or blue. I just need one that is close to me and has a good pedigree. Anybody got any ideas?

I have a budget of up to $9,000 for the right car. I know your out there.......come and find me!

Thanks and my e-mail is: Boeing717Driver@aol.com

Jeff :J :J

Citruspilot.....

Yes they are out there with the production numbers for the '79 @ 53,000 units produced, but I think that your budget is a bit "lean" in the 9k mark for a nice clean original driver.

Good luck.

Thanks for your insight. BUT I have been in the resale business for many years buying and selling aircraft. Not the same mind you as cars but buying and selling is all the same.

It seems that if you look under every rock and around every corner you can find just the right situation and price. As it turns out I have found a Red/Red 1981 with only 68,000 original miles and no previous damage history with decent interior and paint. The paint will need to be done in the next two or three years to make it sharp but for the money it might not be a bad deal. The seats are ok with a few small blemishes and the dash and console are fine. Everything works as I am told and the car is all there with nothing obvious missing. It is a two owner since new vehicle. I wont give away the exact price but its in the $7,000's! And to top it off its not far away from me!

So I will be seeing the car in the next 24 hours and maybe my hunt will be over. Wish me luck!

I can hardly wait so dont let the seller know how excited I am! Is it Christmas or what?? :m

I'll keep you posted.

Jeff........

Well good. Sounds like your on the right track!

I think if one is patient it is possible. I think it also helps to have someone else with you or helping you like I did when I bought my '79 last year. They are able to see the overall picture better and can be more objective because they are not buying the car.

I do agree with many others here on this board who say buy the best car for the most money you can afford. You won't regret it.

When I bought mine last year I had been out of Corvetting for twenty some years and wasn't sure that I still had the passion for the "Lifestyle" or the car so I was concerned about spending alot of money on the car. I quickly found that I STILL DO and now wish I had spent more money and gotten a even nicer car.

.

Thats a very, very good point. My idea was to pick a range like upwards of the mid-$9,000 then work back from there. I am calculating for the possibility of getting new seat covers, carpet, and whatever mechanical stuff fixed up over the next two or three years that need to be done which might even include paint. So I arrived at the $7,000 range as my lowest number for a purchase price.

So, keeping in mind that I am much more critical of the cosmetics and mechanical aspect than most people, I am trying to be less judgmental and look at it as just a car and not an "aircraft". Having 13 years experience in buying and selling aircraft has made me a much better "equipment" buyer than most people. But I am much more "suspicious" at the same time because I have had plenty of sellers try to "pull the wool over my eyes" during aircraft purchases. But what they didnt know was, as a professional in my line of work, I knew more than them most of the time. However in this case I find myself less knowledgeable and much more suspicious.

I did own a 79 L-82 4 speed about 6 years ago and drove it for over 5 years. I spent alot of time and money doing what needed to be done like tires, brakes, cluth, suspension, rearend, minor engine work, and some basic cosmetics, etc, etc. So I do have a good knowledge of the Corvette to draw from and know what to look for. But like I said at the top. Your idea of spending more money now and getting "the most car" is interesting and makes me want to rethink my approach.

Only problem is finding the right car?? If I buy one that has a new paint job, seat covers, exhaust, carpet, tires, etc, then I see that most sellers are asking in the $10,000 to $12,000 range. Some of the dealers are even asking in the $14,000's! More money than I have budegeted right now with a daughter in college. In fact some of those cars even have more miles on them than the one I found noted above. So, in this case, maybe I have found a good deal afterall????

So as you can see by this post I am looking at this purchase from every angle that I can. Even some angles that arent even there! My wife says that I am "holding on way too tight" and reminds me that its only a car. She is right I guess!! :argue But dont tell her I said that!!

Boy, will I be glad when this Corvette purchase is over! :hb

Greekman, thank you for your replys. I'll keep you posted if your still interested.

Hope I havent confused you?? Because I am! :eyerole

Jeff...

Keep us posted and Good Luck.

I know of a nice 78' 4 speed and 350. It's clean, straight and the only things I know that it needs is a radio. It has been garaged in the winter and driven only in the summer. I think the guy is asking $7000 for it. He just purchased another vette and needs the room in the garage. Let me know if you are interested.

Gary

Sounds interesting! I just happen to have a brand new remote control Alpine CD/FM/AM XM radio ready just looking for a dash board to go to work in!!

And a 4 speed huh! What part of the country? And yes I am always interested in hearing about a Corvette for sale in this vintage. Do tell. How many miles, condition, etc....

I am going to see the 81 tommorrow. I'll have the CASH in my pocket to buy it too. If it doesnt pan out I'll be more interested in that 78 though.......provided its not a GU!

(GU=Geographically Undesirable) ;shrug

Thanks,

Jeff

The vette is in MN near Minniapolis( Spelling error) I can send you some pictures or give you the information on how to contact the owner directly. I know the owner has taken very good care of the vette and anything that needed to be fixed was done. Expect the radio; he just hasn't got to that when he decided to buy another vette.

Gary

Thanks. But I think I'll pass. Its just too far from me to make it worth my while. That would be the classic "DU". I live in Charlotte, N.C. and thats a loooong way from me. I am sure shipping would be close to a Grand too......thats money I could be putting into the car................

But I do appreciate your help and offer.

Thanks

Jeff

Well, heres the results of the inspection of that 1981 Red Vette I went to see today near me. Turned out the day ended up being a very nice ride to the mountains for some last minute Christmas nik-nak shopping for the wife. The Vette, well, thats another story.........

Upon our arrival the car was sitting pretty and looked good from 20 feet as described by the seller, wheels shiny and it was clean. However upon closer inspection the car had literally hundreds of spider/stress cracks all over the body in the weirdest of locations. Not only in the stress areas but in places that you would not expect stress to be. Really weird. Turns out the car had been repainted before and the paint prep was so bad that the original paint was cracking from underneath. The inside of the rearview door mirrors had so much over spray on them that it was visible while sitting inside the car. They hadnt been removed during the repaint. Really looked bad. Now the seller did tell me the paint was not that good but I guess he forgot to tell me that it had a very bad repaint in its history. I understood it to be the "original" paint and it needed to be redone from age. Any halfway knowledgable car person would have known that this paint was not original and was a cheap job from the past which would require much more labor the second time around to be redone, costing more than expected. I guess he's not as Corvette smart as he thinks he is.

Anyway this gets better folks..... Opening the car I found that the drivers door key would not unlock the door. The seller told me that one set worked better than the other so I tried the other set? Let me ask you, how could one key work better than the other when the actual door lock mechanism is broken inside the door? Oh well it did open the passengers door just fine. And the tires! They were completely bald with the wear indicators even worn off! There was no tread at all! Now I expected to see worn tires but this was ridiculous!

Then after a quick inspection under the hood I quickly noticed the smog pump had the pully removed from it so there was no belt attached to the pump. And there was some kind of fitting, air maybe, removed from the back of the pump basically rendering the pump useless. Now it did turn under "finger power" but that was a big concern of mine to say the least because in NC we still have a state smog inspection and in this condition the car would definately not pass an inspection to be registered into my name. And the cost to repair it? I dont know.....do you?

Anyway I decided to take it for a quick drive just for the hell of it as I had driven 100 miles to go see it and to give the car one or two more chances. The car ran OK but as you drove it down the road the front end was soooo loose that you could move the steering wheel from the 10:00 o'clock position to the 2:00 o'clock position and the car would still go straight! Really! At that moment I knew that I was just wasting my time. The car showed only 68,000 miles but it drove like 168,000 miles. Now I just cant see a car driving this badly with only 68,000 miles on it even if the car is over 20 years old and the tires are worn out. Things do wear out but not that bad. Well anyway, as mentioned above, the drive to the mountains with the Mrs. was fun and gave us a break away from the rat-race for a few hours with a nice lunch in a mountain retreat.

The moral of this story is even though you think you are dealing with a person that says they "buy and sell Corvettes all the time and he knows them very well" I dont think this guy did a very good job of telling me the "real scoop" about his car. I think he could have been more truthfull. I expected to see "an original" car needing a paint job with only 68,000 miles with "all" the smog stuff operational, as discussed, and tires needing replacement sometime in the future, but not NOW. I only spent 10 minutes with this car and found out all this stuff rather easily and I am only a pilot for gods sake. Made me start to wonder what else this expert forgot to tell me about the car. Really sad if you ask me. I guess he thought that "the low price" would make me buy it. Guess again.........

I was offered the car for "X" amount, in the $7,000's, then lowered another $200.00 for the smog pump issue. But, after I drove it, I left the car and didnt even make him an offer. After thinking about it all the way home and 100 miles later I guess I'll e-mail him an offer of $1,500 less than his "low price" to buy it from him "ONLY" if he delivers it to me with the smog pump issue resolved and the car inspected. Thats the law here by the way. You "cannot" sell a car if your a car dealer with an inoperative emissions system in N.C. Maybe I should remind him of that....

I guess I'll switch my thinking to what Greekman said above. I might be better off raising my buy price and go for a better car from the very beginning. :hb

Does anybody have any other cars, 79/80/81, for me to possibly consider buying NEAR to me in Charlotte, N.C.????? The price is still somewhat an issue to me at this point but I am willing to consider more expensive vehicles than this one. Its just too rough at the current price......

Thanks for your ears folks. Sorry to be so winded in my long story but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This Corvette buying thing is going to make me start drinking! :drink

Jeff :(

an interestlng and entertaining story. Which always bring us back to the "you get what you pay for syndrome". I'm an estate liquidator and I get a lot of the same over the phone- good as gold bs. You will find the right car at the right price when you least expect it. Good luck.

There is a beautiful one here in Maryland around my neck of the woods. 48000 miles, red on red gorgeous. Its a 81 automatic. Guys asking 16000.00 but he's not firm. Having delt with him a bunch of times I suspect he would let it go for 10g's cash....and this car needs next to nothing. Its all there...turn key and go. It has passed state inspection and smog inspection too so I know its all there. He's a corvette only dealer with a very good reputation. I have bought 3 cars from him and never got a bad deal. I would buy the car myself but I already have a gorgeaous 81 I bought from him 2 years ago. However , he's looking for a 72-74 for me right now. I trust him. He's straight as a car dealer comes. It may be what your looking for. And being the slow season , I'm sure he's ready to deal.

Take care,

Taz:_rock

Well, I guess Maryland isnt too far from NC. I would be interested in hearing about the 81 you know of Tavdevl35.

Please e-mail me with all the particulars......Boeing717Driver@aol.com

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff...

Interesting review of your visit to see that Corvette.

I'm afraid I have a few stories just like that one before I found my '79. The cars looked good from a distance, but when you got up on them they weren't so nice. The engines all had the original air ducts removed long ago and had a lot of worn out high performace parts on them. Headers, big Holleys etc. They were all L82s and 4 speeds which was what I wanted.

When I saw my '79 it was a base engine and an automatic! I couldn't past the car up as I thought it was in excellent condition and everything was pretty much correct and all there.

I don't mine not getting the L82, but wished I had looked longer for that 4 speed. Still not enought to pass on it.

These cars were all in the $9-10K price range and one seller even already had the Title out that he was so sure I would take it for his low price? He was still scratching his head when we drove off.

Keep looking, they are out there and I'm sure you will find what you're looking for in car and price if you keep looking long enough.

This is a excellent time of the year to buy! Christmas and Income Tax bills coming up.

Good luck.

PS:Keep us informed on your search, we all love stories like these!

I have found another one to go see, maybe even tommorrow. Its a 79 like yours with only 27,000 miles. Its an automatic vehilce that has been stored in a climate controlled warehouse for a good while and needs nothing cosmetic at all. The seller says it needs an airconditioner compressor. The price is in the $8,000's so I dont think I can pass it up even though its not the 80/81 body style that I wanted. His reason for selling, he needs money for taxes!!

Wish me luck and I'll keep you posted.

Jeff

Well, the gentleman I was supposed to see today called me and said that the more he thought about selling his 79, and after tinkering around with the car this morning, he has decided to keep it for awhile. He said that while he was checking the car over for my inspection this morning he opened up the air cleaner and found the original AC air cleaner! He said that he will keep it for another few months and if he decides to sell it later he'll call me. Now keep in mind this car has only 27,000 miles! I was really excited to be seeing this one and buying it. But I need a car now and not a few months from now...........;shrug Oh well!

Hey guys! I cant believe that none of you dont know of any 79/80/81 Vettes in decent condition that I can buy for the $9,000 range? It just doesnt seem possible that out of all the members here somebody cant help me with a car........ ;help

I am prepared to travel some to see the right Corvette and drive it home. I will pay CASH!! I was leaving this morning on an airliner to see that 79 above two states away so thats how hard I am looking.............SOMEONE PLEASE!!!!!! :BOW
