Hi all, possibly a rather silly question, but i;m curioius as to know if there;s a DIY method of checking the auto tranny fluid levels. All the publications I've seen so far tell me to take it to the dealer., THAT I am noy quite ready to do Asalways all replies are much appreciated........ thanks again,,,,,Chris 2001 coupe z51

The problem is that the dip stick and tube are no longer on the trans starting with 97.

You have to raise the car on jack stands on a level surface, start the engine, allow the trans to warm then remove the plug on the side of the trans while the engine is running with the trans in park or neutral. Then you remove the fill plug and check the level like you would with a manual.

Although I have not done it, my research says that in addition to the above procedure, DON"T shut off the engine while checking since it will allow the oil to drain out. It is a PIA.
