hi all

I've noticed since I got my '65 that sometimes, not all the time, when I'm "getting on it hard" and winding out in second gear it will slip back into neutral. Kind of unnerving when it happens.
It doesn't do it in any other gear except 2nd and as mentioned it doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes and only when i'm running it hard and it's really winding out. I'll get about half way thru the rpm range and as it's still pulling hard it just slips into neutral.

something worn or going on the tranny or more of a shifter linkgage adjustment?
If it makes a difference, the shifter is a hurst shifter that is a "look-a-like" the stock one.

Barry, when you stand on it, it look's as though the G-forces are so strong in that Corvette of yours, that just the weight of the shifter rod, is pulling it rearward, and slipping it out of gear. ;LOL

All kidding aside, I would look closly at the adjustement of the shifter rod for second gear at the tranny end. It might not be getting it far enough into gear.

thanks Bob. It looks like a whole new area of the car for me to start learning about now....... :D

Barry, don't take this solution to the bank, it's only the first in many sugestions that will surly be offered. It's quite possible that there could be much more involved here, then a simple rod adjustement, but it's a place to start.

I understand that but I'm REALLY hoping at least that the issue is with the linkage adjustment rather than something much more serious and something that will require pulling the tranny and having it repaired.

i'll have to start looking at my shop manual to learn how to check for proper linkage adjustments. Guess I need to find a lift to use or at least finally break down and get that floor jack and jackstands I've been thinking about so I can crawl underneath this car. Well, I need them anyway so I can start doing my own oil changes, etc.
This issue is now on my list of winter projects. Boy that list is getting long.........

Barry,

2nd gear is the most abused gear in a muncie. Often the slider, keys or the teeth on the gear wear causing loose engagement and the trans to "pop" out of gear. Adjust your shifter first, but you will probably find your culprit is worn tranny parts.

Dennis, you realize that is exactly what I DIDN'T want to hear.......... :(

but i'll start with the linkage adjustment first and see what happens.
