i changed the filter and gasket earlier this year and now have a drip.....there is a cable going into the side of the trans that is on a bracket that is bolted on to the trans housing with 2 of the pan screws.
the gasket isnt the leak , it seems to be at the point where the cable goes into the trans....is there some kind of "O" ring in there that i can get to....thanks:bu

I had a leak at from my speedo cable seal.I fixed it twice then noticed it is leaking again. It`s a slow leak and right now I`m just watching it.That may be where yours is leaking.

can i change it with out dropping the pan? did you have to drop yours ? thanks

I believe you are referring to the gear selector shaft that the shift cable attaches to. Yes, there is an o-ring on that shaft and it can only be replaced with the pan off.
The speedo gear seal does not require pan removal.

that has to be it....it seems beefy to be the speedo cable......im dropping the pan as soon as i put the carb back on and can drive it up the ramps.....Thanks:beer

vettedude,
What you are looking at is the selector shaft seal. It is not an o-ring. It presses in from the outside. There is a tool to do this without dropping the pan.

Tranny leak

I had the same problem on my 79 about 3 months ago. I tried several things prior to going to Chevy and buying the replacement speedometer insert for about $14.00. Once installed the problem went away. I had this leak for over a year before I finally broke down and gave in to the Chevy replacement.

is it the kinda tool i can buy or borrow....im hoping to find it soon....starting to bother me , just knowing its doing that. it didnt leak at all before i changed the fluid....think that when i dangled it i wrecked the 30 year old seal?ive got a few more to go but the worst is first and this is it. thanks fore the assist.:D

Any of the usual tool companies have it, Snap-on, Matco, etc. KD tools also carries it. Try calling parts stores to see if they have KD. It makes changing the seal a 5 minute job.
