Were 3-speed Saginaws ever factory installed in C2 Corvettes? I have a saginaw 3 speed that allegedly came out of a 66. Is there any way of verifying this? If found this number stamped on the case next to the side cover. S0401. If casting numbers would help, I can get those too.

Thanks!

Larry

Yes, Saginaw 3-speeds were used as the base transmission from '56 - '65 in the original "small case" design with non-synchronized 1st gear, and the completely redesigned "large case" design from '66 - '69 with synchronized 1st gear. The 4-speed became standard equipment in 1970.

A '66 Saginaw 3-speed should have the following casting numbers:

Maincase - 3858986
Tailhousing - 3873886
Sidecover - 3858992
Front Bearing Retainer - 3859033

Awesome guys, thanks!

Now, are these numbers particular to the Corvette only or do all 66 Saginaws have these casting numbers?

Dunno - all I have are the numbers for the Corvette applications.
