Hello all,

Just started doing this, when I get it up to about 44 and put the gas down a lil sometimes you hear a massive Vibration coming from the Transmission..... Once you get past that it goes good. I Think its like 5th gear but not 100% sure.. Any ideas? Its going in the shop Tues. or WEd. but I was just wondering if thisnould be a minor problem or something serious. Or if it is a common problem?

Thanks

5th gear is a stick. But you say that you 'think' it's 5th, so it's NOT a stick, or you'd know where the shifter is.

So let's flip a coin - heads is auto, tails is auto, lands on the edge, we flip again.

First, let's take 3rd gear up to about 55, engage cruise control, speed steady, then push the shifter to big D, and see if it happens. Then we can see if rpm's at 3 to 4 shift has any effect. Then pull it back into 3, check the downshift, then back. See how that goes...

'93 is electronic I believe, so stick a paper clip in the ALDL, and see if anything comes up. Have a pencil handy, and write down DTC's. Some H historys will NOT light up SES.

Post back up on that...

The 93 transmission was a 4L60 and the 94's were 4L60E. When the change was made to OBD2 is when the 4L60E was used the E designates that it is the electric shift control model. Before that the 4L60 shift points were cable controlled. To adjust the cables on the 4L60 you have to follow the adjustment procedure for the TV adjustment of the ASR unit.

I am not sure but I believe in 94 some of the early production still used the OBD1 and therefore were still the 4L60 unit.

Sounds like torque converter "lock up clutches" ..they should disengage when you accel though...if never done (don't know your mileage) a fluid flush may not be a bad idea.

93 is a 1 yr wonder, 4L60E's came out in 94 OBDI, 93's are a little different the 700r4's, but called 4L60's and you have to find the instructions for adjusting the TV cable for a 93, as it is different from 700r4's.

OP, the vibration is coming from the car being in 4th and the RPM's are to low, it is like starting out in 3rd on a manual.

Your TV cable is out of adjustment, you need to re-adjust the cable.
When I get my car back, I will send you the FSM adjustment procedure.

If you have never done anything to this transmission, it sounds like the band is slipping/breaking or a servo.
And 93's are unique, with year only valve bodies and lock up switch I beleive.
I am going through this with mine right now, 4th time.

The cable controlled trans in a 93 is very dependent on the cable tension. From what I can recall there are 3 cables that go the ASR motor. I have found the cable locks can and will move causing all kinds of tranny issues. I secured mine., forget how exactly but they don't go out of adjustment anymore.

I am experiencing similar symptoms with my 1993 auto, but I have no idea how to check or adjust these cables.. do you still have that procedure and could you please send it to me? How are the cables checked/ serviced ?? Many thanks.:beer

I used the FSM and went through the process several times, ensuring I was doing it right. I checked the TV cable with the pan off and it was where it was supposed to be, barely touching, yet plunged all the way in during WOT.
Pressures were right on.
But, the procedure with the ASR contraption to adjust the tv cable is a bit overwhelming, if you have never done this before.
