Transmission removal

NT Vettman said:
Looking for some advice and techniques. Yesterday on my way to opening day at Watkins Glen race track my automatic transmission in my 90 vett went south. Lost drive and 2nd gear, had to be towed home. Big bill for that ride. Any way I am not sure if I want to pull it or have my mechanic do it. I looking to see how easy is it to get to the bolts on the bell housing. Any body got any secrets or tips on pulling it out. I pulled a complete engine and tranny from my friends 89 but this looks to be a little more difficult to get to the tranny only. When it does come out I’m taking it to a local performance transmission shop in my area for a rebuild

I pulled the 4+3 on my 86 here:

Hey Hrtbeat 1 Pulled the tranny out late Sunday night. Got at the trany shop today. Your info was very good but how in the hell did you remove the C beam? My son and I realy strugled to get it down. We finnaly just pushed it back to the rear end to clear the tranny and then pulled the tranny. SO I', getting performance clutches, shift kit, heavy duty 5 gear rear planitary and a 2400 stall stall converter. Should be back in a bout 2 week

Once the bolts are out and the other stuff is out of the way, mine came right off w/o too big of a 'persuader' to tap it off of the diffy. It helps to support the diffy, but I did it alone; twice, so far.

Good to hear. That's the part I was talkiing about having the jack and jack/pry lower/pry ect. Yea its a real PITA. Iv'e found if you pull all the bolts then slide it toward the diff and the front toward the passenger side you can shove the tailshaft over far enough t clear the C-Beam. You almost have to do it with the drive shaft in. Its real tough to get the drive shaft in or out with the C-Beam in place.

I don't know that you really need the shift kit ... I was told to save my money. One thing I went with is a Beast Sun shell, one of the weak points of the tranny. They do away with the thrust washer and use a torrington bearing. I was really surprised how scored mine was after 100k, should be good to go now with the torrington bearing.

The shift kit comes as part of the street/strip package. The Beast is what is going in with the 5 plaentary gear set up. I hate seeing her in dry dock but I guess it will be worth the wait. Hey does any body kknow how to put a picture with one of these treads. I tryed and it didn't work. If I could I'd show ya a picture.

I know what you mean about dry dock. Mine stays in the garage the whole time I'm at sea. I hate to leave her, but she's safe. You don't know how much you love the Corvette till you are at sea for two months. Gave the baby a wash today, wax tommorrow.
