The time has come and I need to have my tranny rebuilt. I have a 1996 LT-1 (auto) and it has started to slip. The question that I have is multiple:

1) What should I upgrade since I am having to rebuild/replace the tranny?

2)Rebuild or order a new one and just install?

3)Complementary things I can do while the car is on the hoist? I was thinking of changing the gears but no idea if these are related.

All info would be welcome. I am not very technical so all my work will be done by my mechanic.

I see ads on TV for jasper engines and transmissions. I know a few race fans here where I work have reccommended them but I have had no personal experience. I figured if I ever had a problem with either I would at least check them out. Thought I'd mention it. Good Luck!

I'm from about 30 minutes away from Jasper so I should be all for them, but I can tell you that they sell stock remanned trannys for more then a name brand performance tranny. The Corvette ones are ungodly expensive.

If you are mechanically included try to rebuild it yourself. I'm doing my first one now. The hardest part is trying to figure out which parts I need but the actual rebuild isn't too bad. I've viewed both of the popular 4L60E rebuild DVDs. They are very, very helpful.

You could still spend close to a grand doing it yourself though if you buy upgrades which I would suggest you do. You will absolutely want the "Beast" sunshell, the 29 element sprag (double cage design), and Hi energy clutches or better. If you buy a mass built reman you probably won't get exactly the upgrades you need or want.

BTW, there are more upgrades out there, but these I consider "must haves"

Wow....don't want to go too far off this thread but, how would one aquire the DVD's for the rebuild? Always interested in doing one and would like to review the rebuild. Thanks!

Smartflix.com will rent you both of them for around $15 each, but take my word, they take FOREVER to get. The Rick Metzing DVD was on a waiting list. I waited close to 6 weeks and eventually cancelled my order. Shortly after I cancelled and they sent my refund they sent me the DVD anyway. Both are very good. Rick Metzing's DVD is more indepth but also 3 times the price. For $29 purchased, the Paul Zank video is well worth it. I ordered his differential rebuild DVD too. I'll sell you my Paul Zank DVD for $20 plus a couple bucks shipping if you want it.

Thanks for the sites. I think there is a little difference in our tranns. Mine is cable controlled and yours for a 94 is electronically controlled. I will probably order the video for my car, if they were the same I would buy it from you. Thanks much!

Thats cool.

transmission rebuild

eventually if your running a car with significantly higher than stock horsepower your going to find the STOCK transmission giving you problems, its not a maTter of if...ITS when!
HEAT AND TORQUE LEVELS ARE THE MAIN FACTORS that destroy a transmission so don,t fall for the total bull $hit of advertizing on hp levels
the transmission has a torque level that the parts can stand long term, a th350,700r4, 4l60E,200r4 are all rated at 350 ft lbs in stock form, all can be improved but NONE will have the strength of a properly rebuilt 4L80E or TH400
theres just much more massive parts in the heavier duty transmissions , so before you rebuild your current trans think thru the goals.
example
the formula for hp is torque x rpm /divided by 5252=horspower
so
350 ft lbs at 4000rpm =266hp
350 ft lbs at 6000rpm=400hp
500 ft lbs at 4000rpm=380hp
trust me the 380 hp combo will twist a 700r4 to scrap well before the 400hp combo will
