I have a 97 coupe with 68,000 miles. I was experiencing problems with the car not downshifting timely when I come to a near stop and accelerate again. I put it in the shop and they tell me I need a new transmission. They say it is cheaper to replace it than to rebuild it...$4,500 total with labor.

Has anyone had similiar problems with their transmission.

I only spent $2300 to rebuild mine....that's the going rate in San Jose.......if you need more info.....PM me....

HI there,
That is a little high, seriously.

Call a few GMC or Chevy dealers near you. Ask for the parts dept., and say you have a 4L60-E "core" out or your car (don't say what it is) and you want to know what price of a "SRTA" (service replacement transmission assemby) is? This way, you know what the retail price of the factory transmission is, and the credit for your old core. All you have to do now, is add labor, and I'm sure it will be much less than the 4K you were quoted.

last summer I had a 4l60E rebuilt and a new input shaft replaced (non-corvette) and it ren me $1300.

Hang on a minute...since the only sympton you mentioned was shifting problems, suggest you take the car to a qualified Chevrolet dealer for diagnosis... Without any apparent noises, or slipping between shifts I would be looking at electronics. For example, my Daughter had a 97 Chevy S10 Blazer. One day it would not accelarate any faster than about 15 mph and would not up-shift. Without going through all the details, one of the local garages wanted to replace the transmission. I told her not to do that since I didn't think it was the tranny. She took it to the local Chevy dealer and they replaced a speed sensor and all was well. Total cost was around $200.
