So, the rear end on my '85 is sagging and I order a new set of shocks. I put the first rear shock on and set it back on the garage floor but there is no increase in ride height. I walk to the back of the car and notice the rear wheels have a lot of negative camber. I start to get this bad feeling in my gut so I raise the diver side rear end, crawl under the car and there it is; a cracked and splintering transverse spring. Do I buy a new OEM, other aftermarket, or used spring? What else should I do while I have the rear up in the air?

Not a big deal.

Look at the metal tag on the rt side upper of the spring to get the code. Lots of different springs. This MATTERS a LOT.

Its a 1 hr job. Jack car, remove end link long bolts, allow spring to hang down. Remove the 4 center mount bolts, carefully or you crack the mount. PAY attention to the shim location/count.

When you remount you might have to use the floor jack to lift the end of the spring UP to get the long bolt started. Do the other side...adjust nuts the same on each side. Tighten center bolts cross pattern so the mount is not cracked...its easy to break if you run a bolt down then do the other...Be sure shims go in as they came out.

Done.

Do NOT use any wheel cleaner or caustics around the spring. Any wheel wash or other harsh chemicals will break the spring.

Springs can be had for $200....less used. Search FleaBay or the catalog stores. No need to worry about used ones...they are as near bullet proof as anything.

High exhaust pipe heat ruined mine, so I'd suggest you know why the spring failed. :w
