Are these notoriously wrong, do I have a correctable problem or must I just live with it?

I noticed while driving local in the first Corvette I have ever owned (1989 w/31k on it) that fuel was being eaten up a lot quicker than the trip computer claimed. The computer showed an average mpg of 18 when my calculations showed 15 for driving around local, and the "Range" function was just as far off. When I went cross country, the average mpg showed about 28 with the instant right around there, the initial range shown was about 550 miles but in reality it was closer to 400 per tank (I didn't run exact calcs, but this held for five or six fill ups). And yes, I reset the mpg computer at the start of the trip (roughly 1,400 miles).

I have to guess that it thinks less fuel is flowing than actually is. Is there a way to adjust this?

Thank-you!!!
