Okay, I might show my ignorance here...or my inability to use the "Search" function on the site.

Anyway, one of my recent random thoughts involves adding a turbo or supercharger to a C5. Is this even an option? Has anyone done this? Does anyone have an idea of the cost involved?

Like I said, I haven't had much luck researching this, so maybe it is a stupid question, but I'm sure it won't be the last time I ask one of those!!!

Senator,
Yes, you can certainly install a supercharger or turbocharger to a C5. (You're not a real elected official, are you? Imagine an elected official wanting to tempt fate and the law by adding more power to a Corvette! :L )

There have been a number of threads about both, but my advice would be to go with a supercharger, as I believe it would do more to add HP to your C5. THIS THREAD in particular has several good suggestions for makers of superchargers.

One thing to remember- a good supercharger is going to require a certain amount of engine rebuild to accommodate it. You can't go adding significant compression to a stock LS-1 or LS-6 (or any engine, for that matter) without shortening it's natural life span, and that rebuild is where a fair share of the cost is going to come from. The kit I personally crave is a Magnusson Supercharger (installed, $8,900.00)

Contrary to Patrick said you can most certainly add a supercharger to a stock LS1 or LS6 and have it live a long happy life. Tuning is very, very important. If it is not tuned properly your engine will fail.

I personally prefer centrifugal superchargers (Vortech or ATI) over roots type (Magnusson).

Something else to consider is if your car has an automatic transmission it may not live a long time if you add boost. If you have a 6-speed you will be fine as long as you don't do high rpm clutch dumps with sticky tires. I am still running my stock clutch and it is holding up fine so far even launching on drag radials at the strip.

Yes, a supercharger can be installed on a stock internal engine without major issues as long as you keep it down below 550 RWHP and get a good tune. Also keep the AFR at WOT below 11.9 and run good gas to avoid detenation. Talk to Andy Green at A&A Corvette http://www.aandacorvette.com/ about his custom ATI Procharger kits. East Coast Supercharging http://www.eastcoastsupercharging.com/ and 21st Century Muscle Cars http://www.eastcoastsupercharging.com/ are also good bets. With any power adder, you will need to strengthen the tranny & rear end. Traction will be a problem.

take a look at Lingenfelter.com......They have a goodlooking system. It was featured on this site not too long ago.It is an option I would consider, and my mechanic agrees(that happens rarely).

www.vettedoctors.com in amityville long island would be a dam fine choice especially if you grab the special they run around christmas time.

8 grand installed for an intercooled magnuson supercharger with painted hood.

I say you can't beat that with a stick. These guys are great. Have a great reputation and do real quality work.

I like the 8 grand pricing around christmas time that they have run for the past few years.

I would not put on headers or any other mods.. but rather the basic intercooled s/c hit.

Performance is top notch as is the reliability.

Thats what I would do.

Chris and Doug at ECS are excellent as well but don't know their pricing off hand.
