Can anyone shed any light on this?

On a 1982 model I pulled the turn signal flasher because neither side or front or back was working and out fell a capacitor.
It is part number 14005049.
The wire on one side has a flat copper end with a bent in itm the other end is just a wire,I assume the clip came off at sometime.
I see it on a picture in the build manual.
Here is first question.
Am I right in thinking that both ends should have the flat clip and each end plugs in with each terminal on the flasher?
Next, what is it for? Do I need it with a new flasher?
Thanks,Jim

I will try a picture, Rod

I'm seeing a double end wired cap in your pic. One of the reasons for it that I remember, would be for audio noise reduction on your radio. Reduces popping sounds.
Check the flasher cavity for missing terminal. If not, local autoparts should fix you up for that terminal.
Reinstall it as shown. Try a new flasher unit to get your signals working.

Got that too.
The capacitor should be parallel to the flasher unit; this cap should have U type clips which fold around the flasher terminals, and this assembly pushed into the flasher contacts on the fuse panel.
Perhaps the 'missing' U tab is still sticking in the base?

2nd part of question guys.

If I put a new flaher in which has I different number (btw)

Do I still need the capacitor, and if so why don't all cars have them?

If you install a flasher not for your app, it will either cycle faster or slower.
Try it without the cap, see what happens.

There was likely a problem (due to complaints) with that circuit that needed correction, and GM responded with the cap.

The cap is for radio noise supression- there's one on the brake light switch in some years too. Back in the AM radio days, anything that made or broke a circuit would cause a click or pop in the radio. the caps stopped that. Vettes were kind of "special" in that as the fiberglas didn't attenuate the noise as well as a steel bodied car did.
