Question: Turn signal lever removal

What would be the proper procedure for replacing this? I just want to switch out the stalk with a new one I have. I've heard that it just pulls out and I've also read you have to take the wheel off. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Turn signal lever removal - my ex-wife found that pushing if forward and then jerking down on it real hard worked just fine for the removal. Replacing it took a little more time.
