After reading the thread on cam wear and oil additives it got wondering
what then is the best motor oil for old engines. I have a 66 L71 427 that was rebuilt aprx 2000 miles ago. I am using 5/30 oil now, the engine builder
recomends that after the engine is broke in to then run synthetic oil.
What do you guy use? thanks vette pilot

i use straight 40 wt oil in my big block...the stuff they were meant to be filled with when they were new.

Given all the hoopla at the NCRS site and elsewhere I will try 15W-40 diesel oil this summer for the zinc content. I accept the view that new oils are deficient in lubricating needs for older engines.

Not an easy decision, but we shall see. I thought the SAE folks knew what they were doing. Perhaps yes for modern engines but perhaps not for the old.

Paul, I've been using the CI-4 oil based on Dukes and John's advice for almost a year now and no problems - other than the oil comsumption and blow-by issues but they were there before the switch anyway.

In my 246.000 Miles never-opened 327 300Hp I have also
15-40W Heavy-Duty Diesel type oil.
I took that decision aften being through a lot of forums and talked with a lot of oilsuppliers.
In my old 53' Vincent bike I use 10-40 semi-syntetic oil, but think that modern (cyntetic) oil might give trouble depending on the engine construction.
The hyd.valves was the reason for me NOT taking a (better?) modern synt. oil.

Cheers
Jesper
