Tigernut had a charging system thread last week where he asked if disconnecting the positive battery cable while the engine was running was a test to see if the system was charging. He said his died. I'm having a similar problem but if I pull the pos. cable off the engine keeps running. My battery died last week and as usual never gave a warning. After a recharge the battery reads 12.9 static and at alt. and battery 13.7 at 1500 rpm. Does this sound like a regulator trouble?

Are you measuring the 13.7 volts at the battery terminals?

It sounds like your charging system is working fine. I would expect no increased voltage or max voltage if something is wrong with your regulator. Based on the increasing voltage, I would say it is operating ok.

It is possible your battery terminals are dirty or there is some other cabling problem preventing the charge from reaching your battery.

Other than that, your battery may not be holding its charge. You could pull it and have it tested at a local auto parts store.

It was the regulator. As soon as I changed it out I got an output of 14.2 at the battery and alternator @ 1500 rpm. Static now reads 13.4
