I discovered that the water pump is leaking coolant onto the opti-spark. So the water pump and opti-spark get replaced. I'd like to put an electric water pump in, and an upgraded ignition system.

There is also a ticking sound comming from under the left valve cover. It varies with the engine RPM, so I'm thinking worn lifters? What do I look for to indicate worn lifters. While I'm in there I would like to get more hp, so what would be the recomended mods? Rockers, valve springs, lifters, pushrods?

Sure it's not the injector

on that cylinder... easy to check...just unplug it

As far as upgrades go... with a GS I would keep it stock.

LT4 hotcam, you dont even need a reprogram unless you have emissions. You should put in new springs with it.

It does sound like a weak lifter, check your oil level, sometimes low oil levels make the sound show up.

Any chance you have the recalled rocker arms still on your engine? If so, that could be the noise.

I would suggest a stock water pump.

Go fast stuff???? Well, I suggests bolt ons--headers, cat back, free flow air cleaner, adjustable fuel regulator, bigger T/B, and a reprogram on the ECM. You would really benefit from some Richmond 3.75 gears in the back.

cam

If you do the opti/water pump, you should consider a cam.
Some of the labor is already done for you. If don't cam it now
and change your mind later, you lost the labor discount.

And if it's a lifter, I think that makes the cam change even more
enticing.

I'm not too worried about keeping her stock. The tranny and clutch where replaced about 3 years ago, so she's not a numbers matching car anymore.

Besides, she's my toy, and I want even more bragging rights.:t :L

Chris,

According to the car's service history, the rocker arm recall was never performed. Her VIN does fall into the ones listed as affected. But the service history also says the car is not affected by the recall.:confused Also, why stick with a stock water pump? I can free up even more hp with an electric one. Are they less reliable than the stock ones?

Southpaw,

I have thought about doing the cam, especially if I'm going to change out the lifters (though I'll try your injector idea first Vig:)).

So far, all I know that is going to be done is the water pump the opti-spark, and fixing the ticking sound, whatever it may be. The lifters/rockers/cam would just be icing on the cake I guess.

In my humble opinion

Electric water pump ( BAH ) you will not free up THAT much hp.. and you open yourself up to all sorts of other issues like what do you do with the big hole where the drive used to go.

Correct me of I'm wrong here... the water pump is driven off the cam gear.. not a pulley like L-98.

Rockers..IF you have the questionable ones go with some of the magnum roller tips.. don't do the full roller rockers..unless you want different rocker arm covers.. the HAVE to be taller to accomodate the extra height.

IF your going to do the cam... then lifters are in order.

Higher flow headers & exhaust would be a plus.. both from a HP & sonic standpoint

Have you chipped the car yet?

I smell money smoldering in somebodies wallet!
LOL

I thought LT4's had full roller rockers?
